Can plus size ever be classy?

Flicking through a magazine today & realised I just can't do classy at size 18/20. I live in pull-me-jeans, long tops, cardis, it's got to cover my bum. Only time I feel good is in winter with my structured coat & lippy. I'd like to wear shirts, skirts, fitted trousers. Anyone else found a classy way of dressing? This is the image that set me off thinking this, my boobs would look ridiculous in a high neck top never mind the tyre!

Of course plus size can be classy! You're looking at the wrong pictures!

MustShowDH · 07/05/2015 22:06

Watching for inspiration :)

Looking at magazines like that never ends well - wether you're a 6, 16 or 26. Have a look at some plus size blogs.

Adele looks well turned out to me Smile

FresherThanYou · 07/05/2015 22:33

Hmm I always thought she looks a bit stuffed in & uncomfortable

I had a similar thought myself about a month ago. I put on a high-necked blue sleeveless top a bit like in the picture, and I looked... bad. Undeniably bad. I started C25k as a result - haven't changed size yet, but I'm hoping to drop to a 12-14 in a few months, and be a bit more confident in summer stuff.

INeedSomeHelp · 07/05/2015 22:44

I think there are very few people who would look good in that outfit regardless of their size. You need to remember that magazines aren't real!
And I think plus size can look classy - the important thing is to make sure clothes fit you properly and you're not squeezing in to anything too tight (that goes for any size actually).

FresherThanYou · 07/05/2015 22:45

Yeah it's the high neck thing I think looks good, shirts, shirt dresses. I think it's the boobs, I can't dress the damn boobs!

No-one looks good in a blue sleeveless high neck top!

FresherThanYou · 07/05/2015 22:49

"Do not read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly." - Bahz Lurhmann

Adele, Melissa McCarthy, plus-size blogs like www.thisisashleyrose.com/, they all look classy to me.

Misssss · 07/05/2015 22:51

Yes of course you can. I'm bigger than you and I strive to be classy. It's hard work though and I have to really search for suitable clothes. The issue with being fat is to look half decent you really have to try hard. It's not just the outfit you need to be immaculately groomed too.

malefridgeblindness · 07/05/2015 22:58

I've just finished week4 fresher. I'm kind of hating it, and kind of liking it, and I've managed to stick to it so far. Just conscious that run 3 of week5 has 20 mintues running with no break, so that's scaring me a bit. Where have you got to?

cerealqueen · 07/05/2015 23:05

Good underwear, colours that suit you, good quality tailoring, quality accessories and knowing your style - same for everybody.

polyhymnia · 07/05/2015 23:20

Yes all those and great hair cut and colour.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 07/05/2015 23:26

I'm not plus sized but I'm seriously pear shaped - I think if you deviate outside the classic slim hourglass figure (or seriously skinny figure) then you can no longer trust clothes to look good on you, you have to tailor them to fit.

I lived for years thinking I looked dreadful in jeans, for example, but it was because none of them actually fit me properly and I looked scruffy and huge. Now I've got some well tailored, structured jeans and it looks classy. It's a lot more effort than being able to throw on a tshirt and looking naturally gorgeous but it definitely can be done - and well.

ZaraW · 08/05/2015 08:06

I have a friend who wears wrap dresses and high heels for work and the shape is great for her, whilst I am straight up and down it's a style that doesn't work for me.

AmelieinOz · 08/05/2015 08:40

I used to be plus sized and shaped like a refrigerator. It was really hard to find clothes. Most plus size brands make clothes for hourglass. I had nice long slim (well, relatively) legs though. So I always played those up.

But yeah I think noone but models will look good in that top.

FresherThanYou · 08/05/2015 08:42

male day 2! Aching like crazy. Yes I know what you mean, looking ahead I think how will I ever get there? Are you dieting too?

Methe · 08/05/2015 08:45

I don't think it's being plus sized that makes it had to dress classily, it's the boobs.

I've got big boobs and they look cheap whatever I wear.

Have you seen Slink Magazine?

Some really good thought provoking articles and a great place to look for inspiration.

FujimotosElixir · 08/05/2015 10:18

Big cumbersome boobs are no ones friend modesty vests for life over here!

FresherThanYou · 08/05/2015 11:36

No I'll look at that link, thanks
You're right Methe I'm a 38GG even at goal weight I'd be a 36DD & probably wouldn't be able to wear those tops/shirts
I agree Wizard big boobs look desperate & like a joke past a certain age.
