I have never coloured my own hair before, but I am fed up sitting in salons for hours and still coming out with roots! Anyone tried a dye that really works?

When you say roots, I'm guessing you have highlights, if you have highlights, no box colour can give you the same effect

yes, I have highlights but am fed up with always having roots

With H/L's you're always gonna have a bit of root, because otherwise it would bleed onto the scalp and leave blodges!!! IYSWIM
But they do grow out better, than one colour all over,
If you always have a full head, just alternate with a half head next time, do even a T-section, so you're not in the salon as long, and have a full head every 3 visits!
But regarding the roots, they shouldn't be that bad for a good few weeks, unless you're really dark, and you're have super bright H/L's because the contrast makes it more obvious
