Straw to silk! Can anyone please recommend a conditioner for damaged hair

Fine but lots of it so don't need volume, over-processed at the ends especially. Needs rescuing before it gets chopped off in desperation. Shu umura (spp) conditioner helps but I need something even more nourishing, either a regular conditioner or a treatment please. Not sure about using oil, hasn't been a success in the past but willing to try anything.

Trilogy conditioner- the one with nourish in the title.

Castor oil and jojoba oil mixed together, leave on washed hair for 2+ hours, then wash out (will need 2-3 shampoos).

If oil is too scary, I think this hair mask is great

Phyto Repair shampoo and conditioner work really well when I have dry, straw-like hair - my hair goes back to normal within a few washes. It smells lovely too, a bit like mimosa.

I have exactly the same hair/issue. I bought the Kerastase Bain de Force shampoo + a pre-conditioner thing that you put on before shampooing last week. Honestly, the difference already is nothing short of miraculous!!

TheGruffal0 · 05/05/2015 08:27

That mask must smell amazing!

Googling trilogy.

Coconut oil.

TheGruffal0 · 05/05/2015 08:30

Ooh another nice smelling solution, and I have heard good things about Keratese. Will try John Lewis as they may have several of these lines.

I found changing to a SLS free shampoo and conditioner really helped the condition of my hair (and scalp). I changed because my scalp is reactive to SLS shampoos (itchy lumps) but I find that they are less drying and harsh on my hair which is helpful because I wash it everyday (greasy roots, dry ends).

I've tried loads but tbh, the cheapy L'oreal Ultra Riche in gold tubes from boots is just as good as any and is usually on 3 for 2.

Poundland stuff with Morrocan oil Smile

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 05/05/2015 08:35

It does smell brilliant.

I'd also like to know, do colour preserving shampoos and conditioners really work? Right now my colour is washing out of my porous hair really fast revealing the lighter previous colour...

I have tried a number of good quality 'natural' hair ranges but they haven't done the trick. Shu umura was the saviour that changed stick-like strands to soft and flowing but it seems to have lost its magic, or I have changed to the wrong type within their range. Some ideas from fellow-straw sufferers so hoping for imminent relief!

This stuff is natual-ish and pretty good. It rinses out really easily, so is good for an extra conditioning every second wash, with an oil soak or the other mask I mentioned used twice a week.

I also make a blend of jojoba oil, rosehip oil and rose absolute and rub a few drops of it into the ends of hair before air or blow drying. Blow drying on cold or cool shot also makes a big difference.

Castor oil soak is the miracle thing that has restored silken smoothness and banished the frizz though.

Your hair needs some protein treatments. You can buy treatment satchets from Sally's for a couple of pounds or you could DIY. When my hair was over processed and straw like I done forgot nightly DIY masks. The best ones were mayonaise or egg based. Mayonaise is easier but I did do a few egg masks when I had eggs in the fridge that had to be used up. Avocado is also great and I've heard good things about using Greek yoghurt too but I've never tried it personally.

Pumpkinette · 05/05/2015 09:46

*fortnightly not forgot nightly

permalice · 05/05/2015 09:49

Next time you have an outbreak of nits, try treating with Full Marks. It's quite heavy, so you may well look lank the next day, but it's surprisingly good as a treatment for dry ends.

zfactor · 05/05/2015 09:56

Ojon Damage Reverse - it's expensive but very good. The hair mask (which you put on dry hair and leave on for 20 minutes, or longer, and then wash off) and the after-wash conditioner are both excellent for dealing with dry/damaged ends.

MillyMollyMandy78 · 05/05/2015 09:57

I have the exact same problem, so will be trying out some of the above suggestions

TheGruffal0 · 05/05/2015 10:15

These are great suggestions, I have renewed optimism that I may be able to grow my hair longer without looking like Worzel Gummidge!

The tresemme deep treatment in the red tub is brilliant

southeastastra · 05/05/2015 18:31

quite like redken anti-snap

ImBrian · 06/05/2015 13:47

Morrocanoil hydrating mask, I've gone from dark brown to blonde (lots of bleach) and this stuff is great.

Carpaccio · 06/05/2015 14:13

I used to use Redken All Soft which is very good, but it is quite expensive and I really don't like the smell.
The Schwartzkopf Gliss Total Repair hair mask in the white pot is very good and very similar to All Soft IMO. The shampoo and conditioner are also very good. Superdrug usually has them and often at half price.

I am currently using Redken Blonde Idol Sulfate Free as I react to SLS with itchyness, spots and scabs.
Kerastase also has a sulfate free shampoo which is lovely too, but it seems to contain loads of silicones compared to the Redken one, and that seems to make my hair greasy quicker. I am absolutely loving the Redken shampoo.

The combination of the Blonde Idol, then the Gliss mask and whatever I have left of the Kerastase conditioner makes my hair super soft and glossy. I have very thick hair which tangles and knots easily and it can be like straw if I'm not careful with the products I use.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 06/05/2015 14:23

I like the LOreal conditioning treatments in the boxes of hair dye - I wish they were sold separately!

Allie82 · 08/05/2015 21:32

I just bought the Aussie one for shiny hair and I'm pleasantly surprised! Made my hair really soft and smells Delish!

cerealqueen · 08/05/2015 22:30

closer try Ebay for your conditioner

ChablisLover · 08/05/2015 22:47
