We've got a party to go to in a little over a couple of weeks with a WW2 theme.

Have trawled the net a little looking for inspiration and am planning to see what I can hire for the night. Want to try and style my hair too - though it's only scraping my shoulders length. (Dh very serious that we do this properly!)

Still feel a bit clueless though really and wondered if anyone has done anything like this and give me some pointers about what the "done thing" is.

I think Youtube is probably your friend as far as your hair goes. There are loads of videos on there for the perfect victory rolls and the like, here.

Regarding an outfit, if you didn't want to hire, Lindybop has some rather nice 40s dresses here which may well cost about the same as hiring and you could possibly wear again, or sell on.

I'm a 40s fashion fan!
Best authentic accessory to make is a gas mask bag. Glue dark green or khaki canvas onto a box and add a strap.
Get some old lady tan stockings or tights, make sure they have a line up the back.
Hair is pretty simple. buy a hair donut, one of the straight ones. Pin it horizontally above the Base of your skull. Pin your hair up over it so it looks like a big roll. And use ALOT of hairspray. Leave a couple of sections at the front for two wee victory rolls.
Of your hair is too short buy a crochet snood off eBay and after victory rolling the front hold the rest in the snood.
Any knee length tea dress will do. Crepe is a good fabric, it has nice swishy drape to it.
It is easy and cheap to find an old lady dress from the 70s, although they're likely to be polyester not cotton or silk. But the shape and length will be right. I wear mine with court shoes and a fair isle cardi. Only my dress is authentic 40s.
For make up bung on smoky eye makeup, dark upper liner and dark red lips. And the false eyelashes that put emphasis on the outer corners.
A fur cape or stole makes it a bit more glam if it's an evening do.

Ooo! That's fab, both of you. Thank you. Feel like I have a plan now.
