Vanity sizing and Gap

Is it just me or is Gap sizing HUGE?

(before I start, I am well aware that this will sound like a stealth boast, and that isn't the intention).

Anyway. Bought a pair of work trousers in the Gap sale, black slim straight leg. Fairly low on the waist.

No size 6 (UK 10?) so bought a 4 (UK 8?) as there's some stretch in them and thought I could perhaps get away with it. Didn't try on in the shop as was in a mad rush.

Got them on for the first time now and they are huge. They fit ok on the legs but are literally falling off my waist. I wouldn't get a "real" size 8 over my knees, yet these are massive.

Is GAP the biggest current vanity-sizing culprit or what? I definitely haven't lost weight!

Yep, their sizing is massive. I've just bought size 6 skinny khakis and need to belt them in.

2madboys · 28/04/2015 11:59

I find their sizes/waists really strange. I don't have much of a waist (not overweight - just my shape!), but I think their skirts particularly are made for people who are completely square!

Superexcited · 28/04/2015 11:59

Yes, gap sizes are huge. I have to buy everything a size smaller than anywhere else if I shop in gap and even then the clothes are sometimes too big.

DownWithThisTypeOfThing · 28/04/2015 12:04

I bought my sons some trousers from gap at Christmas. I usually go up an age bracket as they're tall but I had to get my 7yo trousers for an 11yo whereas normally he'd get 8-9 or possibly 9-10. I had to adjust the waist as small as it would go so are the sizes just out generally?

Superexcited · 28/04/2015 12:08

Down I find the children's clothes to be tiny in length. Women's clothes are just generally huge. Gap really should address their sizing.

mashpot · 28/04/2015 12:27

I can't buy trousers there as they are too big. Tops are ok though. And yes the kids stuff is very small, one of the few places I can shop for my DS trousers

hugoagogo · 28/04/2015 12:40

Weird. I have to go up a size in trousers, and have given up on tops because they are so oversized, but I am a shortarse.

burnishedsilver · 28/04/2015 12:48

I find their sizing totally inconsistent.
I take 3 or 4 pairs of the same jeans in the same size into the fitting room. One will usually fit well. They are all different.

LBDD · 28/04/2015 14:37

Are they worse than Next? I've just bought a pair of cropped jeans which are really stretchy and comfy but I've had to buy an 8 to stop them falling down and actually could get away with a 6, I'm a 12 anywhere else on the high street.

Pooka · 28/04/2015 14:43

I was buying work trousers last week. 14 in m&s was ok. But hideous trousers. Tried on gap ones in a size 10 which fitted perfectly. White stuff, I'm a 12. Fat face a 10. All so totally random!

The gap trousers were great though. Bought 2 pairs of cords for next winter and 2 pairs of great work trousers for the grand total of £26. So £26 for 4 pairs of trousers.

Runningupthathill82 · 28/04/2015 16:43

I think Gap are even worse than Next. Mind you, I've got a Next skirt which alleges it's a 10, but is at least two, if not three, sizes bigger than that.

StandoutMop · 28/04/2015 16:48

I have 2 pairs of gap trousers, same style different colours. One is a UK 12, one a UK 16. They are identical in the hips and legs, 16 has slightly wider waist. Not sure Gap sizes are big, just random.

I am a 12 or 14 in all shops, but many don't fit my shape (small waist, large area) whatever size I buy. Next is an example of this.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 28/04/2015 16:56

I just find gap sizes really random, as if sometimes they are uk, sometimes us sizes. Always have to try stuff on rather than just look at the label Confused

ZaraW · 28/04/2015 16:57

GAP and Banana Republic are huge. I complained to an assistant in BR about their vanity sizing and she didn't get it she thought it was a good thing that as a standard UK 10 I could fit into a size UK 6.....

jessabell · 28/04/2015 17:13

Might try some gap trousers asusually buy m and s trousers usually fit. Just popped in at weekend very few in 16 long. What had just weren't right. Just wanted basic linen trousers. DIdnt have all sizes So went over to Next had plenty in all sizes16long fitted perfect. Even had extra stock in stockroom.

chanie44 · 28/04/2015 17:36

I'm 5ft but curvy (size 10) and sometimes feel like a toddler dressing up in mums clothes. They aren't just long, they are wide too.

In saying that, I have got some nice stuff in gap, it's just that I can't buy online as the sizing is inconsistent.

TweenageAngst · 28/04/2015 18:02

Are you converting US sizing to UK? All Gap stuff is marked in US sizing so Gap 10 = UK 14

TweenageAngst · 28/04/2015 18:07

Arrg pressed post too early. I find Gap trousers come up small and the tops huge. Agree with PP that the variation of garments with each size means it always has to be tried on

BlueEyedWonder · 28/04/2015 18:15

I'm 5ft and wear a size 6 jeans in Next and M&S and a size 8 in Topshop.
I buy quite a bit online from the Gap petite range and consistently size down. I just ordered some khaki chinos and bought a UK6. I wanted a slouchy casual look otherwise I would have needed the UK4.

carrie74 · 28/04/2015 20:16

I find US shops in general have upped their vanity sizing. I think it started happening when being size 0 became a "thing". I wear a particular brand of US jeans and have been wearing them for years. I started off in a 6 (I was a standard UK10-12). Then last year when I bought them I needed a 4, and this year when I bought them, I needed a 2. Although my shape is slightly smaller than it was, I'd say I've gone down to a solid 10, not dropped 2 sizes. Next year maybe I'll be a 0?!?

Oly4 · 29/04/2015 14:46

Gap is big, I find banana Republic fine, but Gap Kids is miniature!

itsveryyou · 29/04/2015 14:54

I'm in USA and find the Gap bottoms come up small here, and tops seem to be pretty consistently generous. I'm 5ft 11 and wear a UK 14 trousers/jeans, but here I need a Gap 12 which is equivalent to a UK 16 - but my actual measurements measure as a small-ish UK 14. Gap Kids is tiny here!

Runningupthathill82 · 29/04/2015 19:22

Tweenage - no, I'm not confused about the sizing. I'm a UK 10, which should be a 6 in Gap, but the 4 is far too big.

As pp have said though, Gap Kids come up really small

OP posts:
BrianButterfield · 29/04/2015 19:37

I have size 8 (uk) trousers and they are so big I had to move the button on them just so they would stay up. Even so they are like clown's trousers. I think I would actually need to go down two sizes to find a pair that fit - as in a UK 4. I am NOT a size 4.
