Last Wednesday I booked myself in for a haircut with a hairdresser that I've been to a couple of times, she's a great colourist and I usually like her.

The last cut I had (December) she too about 3 inches off my bra strap length hair. It's fair, fine and quite brittle and to be honest needed a good chop but it was still past my shoulders snd looked great.

This time she asked how much I wanted off and I replied ' oh about an inch', she replied 'is that all? ' and looked surprised, I thought maybe the ends were in worse condition than I thought and said 'we'll take off what you think it needs, but not too short as if it's above my shoulders it flicks out'

She did the cut, we had a conversation about me being outdoorsy, and low maintenance so she knows I'm not up for a daily blow dry.

Anyway it looked good though s bit shorter than I expected. Now though I've washed it twice since and it's nowhere near my shoulders Sad the ends are all Flicky-outy and I've just spent an hour with my BBH trying to keep them in - I failed. I'm going for a night out feeling crap with my hair in a pony tail.

I don't suppose it's worth saying anything as there's nothing she can do is there? I just have to wait 6 months for my shit hair to grow out Sad

Can you post a picture? Maybe you will just have to blow dry it and use some of the potions that keep the blow dry in for a few days.

I don't own a hairdryer (hence using the BBH which I keep for special occasions.) I cycle to work and shower there then leave to dry naturally. I'm off out now to a dance (with my hair in a clip Sad) so will post again tomorrow.
I have two weddings and a ball in the next 6 weeks and really wanted to look nice as I'm a bit heavier than usual. Now I just feel like a fat frump

There are some lovely shoulder/above length hairstyles on pinterest that are left to dry naturally and then given some oomph with amplifying powders and they look amazing. Im sure you could do this with your style too.

Sorry to hijack OP and sorry more was cut off than you wanted, i'm still bitterly regretting the long pixie from 18 months ago that was meant to be a bib.
Nillla, I'm getting my hair done tomorrow and your suggestions sound great, could you link please.

Yes thanks everyone. I'm wondering if I should go back and ask for layers - currently a blunt Bob - my hair is very fine but maybe this would add styling options?

Sorry if I sound a bit dramatic - was in tears earlier after an hour of fruitless styling. My hair grows so slowly and I'd been so clear - was really looking forward to the upcoming events so any salvage options much appreciated Smile

Sorry Java just seen this. When is your haircut?

JavaSparrow · 26/04/2015 22:07

No worries Nillla, about an hour after you posted today. As usual I didn't get what I asked for despite numerous pics which hairdresser said all looked the same and would be easy. Somehow still got something different. Seriously it must be me! I do quite like it anyway I think...time will tell.

Sunshine, I completely get your frustration and hope you find something that works for you. Layers helped my fine hair but do need more maintenance, which means more dreaded hair dresser visits. Angry. Hope you had a lovely night last night. Grin

Nillla · 27/04/2015 19:09

How did you end up with it then Java? Is it in a bob?

burnishedsilver · 27/04/2015 20:18

I'm in the same situation myself. Commiserations :-(

JavaSparrow · 27/04/2015 20:44

Yep a bob with layers, today was neat and smart for work. Hopefully I can do the messy look I originally requested for weekends....
How does hair make us so happy/unhappy!?

SunshineAndShadows · 27/04/2015 21:02

Yes I'm wondering if I should go back and get layers cut in - at least then I could muss it up a bit and give it some texture....
Glad yours worked out Java Smile
