Tunic tops and shorts

A good look or an abomination?

I quite like the idea of wearing shorts in the summer, but I'd feel a bit "exposed" and chubby.

Would a tunic top over a pair of short, chino style shorts look ridiculous? As though I had forgotten to wear any trousers?

Should I leave shorts to the young, slim people and stick with skirts?

Will a tunic make me look pregnant?

I wouldn't wear a tunic without anything underneath, but if I am baring something, I'd definitely rather it was my legs.

Not sure what you mean. By tunic I guess a v short dress that might normally be worn with leggings? I've done this with cycling-style shorts. It does look a little like you're wearing a short dress but modesty is protected should you bend over!

This sort of thing.

Nothing wrong with a tunic top and shorts, but it's getting the right cut/colour/proportion that's important. So looking at my own wardrobe for example, I would quite happily wear this top in ecru:

with a pair of denim shorts like these: www.next.co.uk/g4d138s2#350687g4d

Actually I got some fab ones in Sainsburys the other day! s

Boden and Next do good chino shorts (size down in Next). Zara, Mango, H&M and Boden all do good tunic/boho tops.

oh...I wasn't thinking of a tunic like that.

SpiritOfTheRitz · 24/04/2015 10:19

Yes, I mean a tunic that would pretty much cover the shorts, but would be OK if the wind blew or I bent down or sat on the grass of whatever.

So it would look like I was wearing a very short dress.

I'm not sure on how those Fat Face tunics would work with shorts, I think they're meant to be worn with leggings, tight jeans or similar. Having nothing noticeable underneath them could look a bit strange.

I was thinking more the beach tunic and shorts look (like J Crew).

SpiritOfTheRitz · 24/04/2015 15:07

Bother, thought I was on to something!

I don't know what a beach tunic is...

J crew sounds a bit teenage and trendy to me Grin

My summer wear of choice would be a mini skirt. But they are a bit impractical sometimes.

If I wear shorts I think I would want something floaty and long-ish and feminine on the top, to distract from them.

I don't want to wear leggings or tight jeans when it's hot.

J Crewis pretty much the opposite of teenage and trendy!!
