Is this frock ok for dress code 'cocktail dress'?

I'm going to a do next weekend. I love clothes and fashion etx but really really hate these kind of things where I am told what to wear! If it was just black tie I have a lovely floor length vintagey sequin dress. But it's not and am stumped. I'm thinking this frock with a spray tan and black ankle boots. I do tend to have a bit of a drama teacher look, it doesn't seemt I be something I can escape so am just going to go with it. But will I be horribly out of place in this? It is silk with lots of embroidery so fed not a day dress. Can't walk in heels so boots are flat but am tall so that's ok. Also am fairly heavily tattooed so sleeves with somewhat disguise them. What do you think? Is this ok? If not feel free to suggest something else!! Am 5'8, size 16-18, lean towards looser clothes. Shops I likeinc urban outfitters, top shop, all saints, oh and I'm 39 so a combo of overweight and approaching Middle aged means a lot of proper eve short dresses make me look horrific!

Love the dress and it'll really suit your look. The shoes would work but if you're not going to feel comfortable, the advice above re jewellery sandals or ballet pumps is good.

You go girl!

chocolateyay · 24/04/2015 11:14

Wear your shoes. At least you will have to NOT get ratted if you are trying to keep upright.

herbaceous · 24/04/2015 11:15

FF - have you checked out the En Brogue website? Chock full of brilliant flat shoes...

SpecificOcean · 24/04/2015 11:28

Zalando have loads of shoes.

Just a guess but irregular choice for example might be your thing.

Could white DM shoes be cool?

Why can I see no dress picture, but I can see the shoes and glam hair pictures??

InQuiteAPickle · 24/04/2015 11:43

I can't see the dress picture either [pouts]. I love your look though, fierce, you have amazing lips!

InQuiteAPickle · 24/04/2015 11:47

I think some of those shoes linked by SpecificOcean (I like your name, Specific) would suit your look and the heels look quite manageable.

IhavenevermetAnthonyHead · 24/04/2015 12:04

Fierce does indeed look fierce. Grin

forfuckssake · 24/04/2015 12:18

I can't see the photos of the dress, although I can see the others. Can anyone tell me why this is (I only just joined if that makes a difference).

In any case, OP, you are gorgeous, and I am loving your style.

workadurka · 24/04/2015 12:22

I like the asos peep toe boots. Love that dress & you look fab ( where is your jacket from??)

LagerthaEarlIngstad · 24/04/2015 12:23

I can't see the dress photo but I can see the others and you look pretty cool to me, I'm sure you'll look great and interesting too rather than just feign a variation on a samey theme :)

LagerthaEarlIngstad · 24/04/2015 12:23

Feign = being

Twinklestein · 24/04/2015 13:45

I think silver shoes would look nice with the dress:

doubleshotespresso · 24/04/2015 14:08

With hair and a face like yours, coupled with the beautiful dress i very much doubt anybody would waste time looking at your shoes! Brilliantly stylish....
I hate the WAG look (feels like i am alone sometimes there though!).

Do agree that boots are probably not best for a cocktail thing, but think Twinklestein may well have just nailed some great options for you. Or ballet pumps? Definitely flats for the way home though yes!

Enjoy your night- you look fabulous in todays photo, so am sure you will look amazing in the dress too...x

Fierceflora · 24/04/2015 15:02

ooooooh I like those middle bottom black shoes. They're pretty cool. No then, twinkle, where can I make such a purchase??? And will they go up to boat sized 9? Though could get away with an 8 as they're open toed

I'll go find them...

Fierceflora · 24/04/2015 15:15

Aha asos! Cool thanks I'll have a wee look a bit later x

No sure which middle bottom ones you were referring to, first or second lot:

Asos Home Straight

New Look

Asos has 1000s, if you want to look through them all.

Snowflake15 · 24/04/2015 15:20

OP you look great I love the dress and the sandals you linked! Aswell as twinkles suggestions Smile have fun!

SpecificOcean · 24/04/2015 19:49

Thanks InQuiteaPickle

Fierceflora · 01/05/2015 14:58

Update! I bought some girl shoes! With heels! I know get me Grin I 'think' I can walk in them. I haven't actually tried them with frock but they were a bargainous £15 so if I don't end up wearing them or taking them off all night it won't be a total catastrophe. What ya think?
