Straight/Columnar Non-Skinny Body Shaped Girls

what do you wear?

I have a weird straight/columnar body shape in a UK12-14 body.

Any tips? I know belted clothing look horrible on me as they emphasise the lack of waist.

Same! Clothing made of stiff fabric with a tailored cut is the only way I can create the pretence of a waist. Belted is not a good look for me either.

TheGruffal0 - so hard to dress up without looking like a boy. LOL. Also have small boobs so really boxy.

Small boobs, broad shoulders, long back - I am a human rectangle!

Fit and flare dresses in the right fabric are the only style that give me a more feminine outline for dressy occasions.

I also go for tailored stuff in an attempt to work around my lack of waist. Sticky-out skirts are my friends because they create an illusion of a waist. I don't wear deep necklines because I haven't got much to put into them.

Some shops seem to design for straight up and downers like me. Karen Millen and Sportmax clothes work quite well.

I'm a 10-12, and although I wear a 28G bra, I'm tall so I look small boobed.

I look best in fitted dresses with vertical seams for smart and slim trousers/jeans and a fitted top - def no belts, wrap dresses, anything fitted under the bust, or maxi dresses.

I've stopped trying to give the illusion of having a waist - I now just emphasise my good bits - slim ish arms and legs. So skinny jeans, always heels, low cut looser tops even on a smaller chest and my blazer is my best friend. Looks good every time . It's semi fitted with no buttons and was only 15 pounds from Primark. With dresses I go for body con or looser fit tube dresses. Never A-line, empire or full skirts. Pencil skirts with pretty chiffon tops are a good look. Hope that helps.

Fit-and-flare works for me too. Actually, the only thing that works! :)

Yes, agreed, it's not all bad news. Straight up and downers tend to have good legs, arms, shoulders and bums so play those up instead.

AmelieinOz · 24/04/2015 11:44

I don't have the good arms. I have big arms. And flat bum :( But I do have nice long legs and shoulder.
