Recommend a tropical perfume for Summer - with caveats!!

that ISN'T sickly sugary sweet.

I adore coconut and vanilla and love me a good tropical scent for Summer.

I have a sample of Creed Virgin Island Water and it's gorgeous but I can't afford a full bottle.

I love Gwen Stefani Harajuku Lovers G but at 34, I feel it's a bit unsophisticated and young.

I bought Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess last year but instead of coconut it smells like straight up ginger nut biscuits on me .

I also have and love Versace Crystal Noir. It's one of my all time favourites.

So something with coconut or vanilla but also with a sting in the tail. I quite like citrus. Not keen on florals (the Versace has gardenia so breaks that rule) or sweet fruity (peach, apple etc) perfumes. Don't usually like anything that is deacribed as 'green'. Hate rose. Hate neroli. Hate patchouli.

In winter I wear Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur or Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille or Tuscan Leather.

Any tips??

To give am example of the sickly sweet I don't want, I bought Avon Tahitian Holiday and it was foul. Smelled like sugar and synthetic chemical renderings of coconut and vanilla. Barf.

The el cheapo gem - Deseo from J Lo. Surprisingly sophisticated considering it's dimestore stuff. But it has a greenish vibe so perhaps not for you.

Virgin Island Water is a popular higher end alternative, but the lime and coconut stuff from Bath and Body Works smells very similar. Yves Rocher tropicals are worth a try too, they are often high quality.

Beyond Love By Kilian is probably my favorite tropical, OTT tuberose and coconut. EL Tuberose Gardenia is worth a try too for a more restrained vibe.

My hot-wether perfumes this summer will be these fantastic Hawaiian drugstore soliflores (Pikake and Plumeria are my faves) and the heady tiare in Huile prodigieuse!

Estee lauder Sensuous nude is quite nice and coconutty or Roberto Cavalli Exotica which smells like the original Roberto Cavalli but with a bit of added mango!

Yves Rocher's Monoi perfume is supposed to be similar and it is around £13.

I don't love the sound of Deseo (there's no coconut in the description?) but Guerlain's Terracotta was on my list. Will see if I can find some to sniff.

Linking to Pikake (they ship to Europe) for any jasmine lovers out there. I really like this in hot weather, a sensuous sampaquita jasmine, one of the very few perfumes that work with sunscreen

Lys Mediterranee mentioned on the perfumistas thread is a great summer perfume too, a salty lily!

Beach by Bobby Brown is lovely and smells like 'being on holiday'.

Trust me, Deseo is very coconutty, despite not being listed as a note. Also Jil Sander Sun is pretty good, created by Pierre Bourdon no less, and only around £20.

For a hot summer's day I love Coco Figue by Comptoir Sud Pacifique. Figs and coconut, as you'd expect!

Or Sunshine and Pancakes by 4160 Tuesdays. Gorgeous.
