I'm about 60 40% grey and have been having my colour professionally - ahem - enhanced for 'some' time. I'm a natural dark brunette and have a full head tint in pretty much the same colour.

But times is 'ard. Woe is me. And I want to stop tearing my hair out. Literally colour my roots myself.

BUT WHAT COLOUR SHOULD I BUY?!?!?

Honestly, I am BAMBOOZLED!

Am I a 4? 4.5? 6? Dark golden brown? Natural brown? WHICH??? Confused

What I'm most scared of is mismatching the colour - my tint is ever so slightly lighter just past my regrowth. It's just slightly more.... Um...'gold' whilst still dark brown. Apart from at the front, under my fringe (where the fairies deigned to make me go very grey Hmm). I have very little grey in the length of my hair (chin length bob).

I think, think, my colourist said I'm a 4.5. But it may have been 4.0 (I know about the .number being tone) and I know I need a permanent to get the colour to stick.

BUT WHICH ONE?! There are just so bloody many options!

Help, Good People. Help.

Level 4 is dark brown. Do not go level 3 as it will look black. If you want a rich medium brown you are looking at a level 5.

The secondary number indicates the tone.

.1 = ash toned
.3= gold
.5= red
.7= violet

Sometimes there is a third number which indicates it has a third, more subtle hue.

5.3 would be a medium golden brown where as 5.35 tips it into a slightly more Chestnut tone.

I have had great results with 4.25 from Loreal in terms of grey coverage and a multi-tonal hair colour.

Sorry it's 4.15 Caracas. It doesn't turn too dark.

I'm no expert but I swear by clairol nice and easy and I use medium ash blonde which is number 8

Thank you! I tried to reply last night but my phone lost signal on the train and then my battery died!

So I think I've got it...!

A 4.3 should be a warm brown with gold, yes?

Wouldn't ash blonde be too blonde for me?! Confused again...!

Yes 4.3 will be a deep expresso brown with a warm gold tone.
