teeth whitening - why zoom laser and trays?

I've noticed that the dentists near me now seem to offer dual whitening treatments e.g the zoom laser and then you wear the overnight trays as well.

I thought they both did the same thing?

presumably because its one of those things that you have done to reset the clock (a bit - don't expect miracles from the lasers) and then they get worse again.

BTW I had mine lasered. It was extremely painful.

oh i know, i had the laser done and agree it was really painful afterwards, but im just wondering why not just use the trays on their own rather than both together.

They offer the trays because although zoom is necessary for an immediate change your teeth change colour again over time and the trays can then be used for upkeep or to whiten them gradually
