Deodorant for a 9 year old?

My daughter is 9 and a very sporty Tom boy. I have noticed recently that when she has been doing sport or running about a lot that she suffers from body odour. I am only concerned because I don't want kids at school to be mean to her if they notice.

Are there any deodorants suitable for this age, it seems a bit young to me but I know how cruel kids can be.

There's one in Boots called Fresh Kidz, my dd, also 9 uses it. It's free of aluminium, parabens etc.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/04/2015 17:42

oh, just seen the reviews, not sounding good. We bought two or three of them ages ago and they have lasted ages, looks as though it might have changed.

We also tried Bionsen, but it smelled quite aftershavey.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/04/2015 17:46

Just had a look, Holland and Barrett have quite a few more natural ones.

sunnydayinmay · 13/04/2015 17:48

I just bought an alcohol free, fragrance free for ds. We looked at a couple in the supermarket. - think we went for Dove but they all look similar.

WalkingThePlank · 13/04/2015 17:51

My daughter has a crystal from Holland and Barratt that works well.

However, the biggest improvement came from switching to Organic milk!

CointreauVersial · 13/04/2015 18:23

It's not too young. DD2 started getting a bit whiffy at that age.

I'm afraid I just use regular antiperspirant for her - Dove or Sure.

sighbynight · 13/04/2015 18:38

My gorgeous 11 yr old has been using deodorant since she was 6. We started with Pitrok, but it quickly moved to Sure and absolute avoidance of man made fibres. She's never been a soap dodger and I personally haven't worn deodorant in 20 years, so it's a bit of a mystery.

clarad · 13/04/2015 18:47

Fresh Kidz is absolutely great. Both my DDS use it and it is extremely gentle on their skin.

clarad · 13/04/2015 18:49

I agree with WhoKnows looks as though it has changed as I noticed they lasted ages as well. Looks like I'm in need of a new kids deodorant too!!

ouryve · 13/04/2015 18:54

I would go for a fragrance free, alcohol free roll on. Mum and mitchum do them and DH likes the Sanex one.

VenusRising · 13/04/2015 19:00

Dove works fine.

The smell comes from bacteria eating the oily secretions from the glands in the armpit, not the watery sweat.
Usually it takes a few years for the pores to settle down, so you may find the smell is stronger when the pores and glands become activated first. They'll settle down eventually.

Shaving any hair from under the arm might help as its easier to clean off all the secretions if it's not sticking to hair.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 13/04/2015 19:16

Pitrok here, for nearly 9yo DS. Spray or crystal. It helps guard against the bacteria which cause the smell. I use it myself too, its very reliable actually.

It is not an antiperspirant, so you still sweat, it just doesn't smell. I don't find that a problem, some might Confused

DarylDixonsDarlin · 13/04/2015 19:17

We tried the freshkidz one, ours smelled funny after a few weeks Hmm

dementedpixie · 13/04/2015 19:26

dd just uses a sure one

Mintyy · 13/04/2015 19:32

My children both needed deodorant from about this age, don't worry - I'm sure 9 is not abnormally young.

Dd and I currently really like the solid Sanex stick. It glides on really easily and smells gently fresh and can cope with my menopausal sweats.

Ds has a Lynx roll-on which he sometimes remembers to use Grin.

LynetteScavo · 13/04/2015 19:45

WalkingThePlank That's interesting about the organic milk! Did you notice any other changes?

(I'm considering abandoning organic milk for regular, and we've used organic for 16 years. Sorry for thread hi-jack Blush)

Greengardenpixie · 13/04/2015 19:46

My dd has been smelling of sweat since she was 7! I couldnt believe it!!! I just get her to use a roll on. I have used dove. Its a pleasant smell and it seems fine on her.

WalkingThePlank · 14/04/2015 11:25

The organic milk worked for both me and DD. Her pits stopped being stinky, literally overnight whilst I've always been sweaty (but hopefully not stinky) and that stopped over night too. I don't think anything else changed though.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/04/2015 11:59

We've always used organic milk and both have stinky pits (DD since age 7). Whereas DS (11) does not but hardly drinks any milk at all, just a bit on his cereal.
