Dyeing over Lush henna

Has anyone dyed over Lush henna? I read loads of reviews about how fab it was, so bought a load but it's just not cutting it - it does make my hair super glossy but does nothing at all to my greys, so think I need to bite the bullet & go back to my hairdressers. Do I tell them? Will my hair go green or something? It's dark brown, nearly black but with a reddish undertone, so most colours don't really stand out anyway.

Oh, and does anyone want 2 1/2 packs of Lush henna? 1 1/2 marron, 1 brun. Free to anyone who has the willpower to sit with what basically amounts to a cowpat on their head Grin

Hi there,

I have done this recently with absolutely no problems at all - been using lush henna or pure henna for around 6 years and have just had it dyed over with brown and caramel blonde highlights (my hair is naturally dark brown). Some of the red from the henna does still shine through slightly but I'm happy with the result.

I think the problems with dying over henna arise when it contains metallic salts which lush henna does not.

Good luck! Smile

going back to my lush days iirc, it wasn't recommended to dye over henna because the chemical dye opened the hair shaft and pushed the henna further in. making it harder to remove. I think you have to speak to a hairdresser who knows about these things.

since I worked there modern hair dyes may have changed. I never did try the henna so no personal messy experience.

Thanks guys! Think I am just going to risk it & see what happens.

No experience of dyeing over henna, but I'd be delighted to relieve you of your unwanted henna - perhaps I could find something you'd like that we could swop?

Madison - my hair sounds like yours and I've never had a problem. They should do a strand test anyway?

My hairdresser told me you just have to wait a little while before you can dye over henna because henna coats the hair shaft and stops the dye taking. He said to wait 6/8 weeks.

I use a Henna I get from Amazon. this one

I haven't tried this one, but the reviews are amazing from people with grey hair: www.amazon.co.uk/Renaissance-Henna-HEN2PAK-Pure/dp/B0083WVDM6

MsAppleBlossom - pm me your address & will post Smile

Oh I might try that other henna - I think the problem is my hair is v dark so even if the henna covers the gray a bit it still stands out.

I use this henna cream. It's very quick and easy to use and covers my copious grey very well, far better than the Lush henna used to. I think you'd need the darkest one they do though.

Thank you Madison xx
