Could a 50 year old wear this dress?

MissMillament · 04/04/2015 16:45

I really love it and have always wanted a 50s style dress but I'm worried I am now too old for it - also should I decide to be brave and buy it - it needs a petticoat underneath - what colour would be best with the grey - neither black nor white seem quite right somehow. Help me make a decision please!

Yes I think that dress is fine for a 50 year old to wear.
What about a petticoat in one of the pattern colours? Lindy Bop have petticoats in more colours than just black or white.

If you've got the figure go for it! ( you must have a tiny waist( I think they're quite elegant and classy. There are quite a few varieties on that link, which one are you going for?

BafanaThesober · 04/04/2015 16:53

Yes yes yes
It's lovlr

Rivercam · 04/04/2015 16:53

I think it's lovely, and if it suits you, then go for it. It would make a great summer dress. I'd buy it, if it had a slightly different neck line (I have an small bust, so cn't do plunging necklines)- ( I'm mid 40s)

GlitzAndGigglesx · 04/04/2015 16:54

If I saw a 50yo wearing that I would think she was very glam

yes it is really lovely as long as you do not have bingo wings like me.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 04/04/2015 16:57

Hmmm not so sure myself -arm issues....

WhatsGoingOnEh · 04/04/2015 16:57

I think yes, and I'm VERY fussy about age-appropriated attire! Women in their 50s wore those in their 50s, definitely. I think you'll look lovely.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 04/04/2015 16:58

*wore those in the 50s, rather

SaucyJack · 04/04/2015 17:01

Buy it. It's a lovely dress for any age- and besides which, life is too damn short to care.

I think a white underskirt would look best.

SquidgyMummy · 04/04/2015 17:05

Well I'm 44 and I would wear it - it's a very flattering shape.
i would wear it with a shrug if worried about arms.

I wouldn't wear a net petticoat though - would look too "costumey"

DidoTheDodo · 04/04/2015 17:09

I'm 57 and have a couple of 50s style dresses and get many compliments (unusual!) when I wear them. And I have a fluffy petticoat for special occasions.
I say yes!

AWholeLottaNosy · 04/04/2015 17:10

I'm not sure about the petticoat either. I'd see how it hangs first.

daftyburd · 04/04/2015 17:14

Tbh with the grey dress I would go for a bright red petticoat. I'm a brazen strumpet though.

Pagwatch · 04/04/2015 17:17

I agree about the petticoat possibly bring too much. It's easy to look too 'try hard' with anything retro and as soon as it would work as fancy dress you have tipped from great into cringe.

MissMillament · 04/04/2015 17:42

Wow - -thanks for all the postive replies. I think I will order it and then make a decision about the petticoat later. I found some for #2.99 on Ebay so won't be a huge investment if it turns out to be too fancy dress.
Cheers for all the positivity. I am off on a Med cruise this summer so the dress should get a couple of good outings if it works. I just don't want to look as if I am trying to keep up with my 17 year old daughter!

I know you've already decided but just wanted to add another resounding yes! I really like all the dresses in the link.

Flipchart · 04/04/2015 19:13

I've got loads of dresses like that and I'm 50. I haven't got arm issues!

Kiffykaffycoffee · 04/04/2015 20:12

fab dress. I'm 50 and would wear it on rare hot sunny days. You don't have to wear a beige sack just cos you're 50! Easter Grin

Lambzig · 04/04/2015 20:42

I am 48 and bought similar in an even less age appropriate halter neck style last year, I loved it.

50ShadesOfSummer · 05/04/2015 08:17

Another "Yes" from me. Disclaimer: I'm in my forties and own a couple of Hell Bunny or similar. Love them with a petticoat. My problem is finding the right occasion to wear them rather than my age.

MissMillament · 11/04/2015 12:06

Update - it has arrived and is lovely. Material is quite thin though so a petticoat or slip of some sort will be required - and/or a camisole if I want to wear it in the daytime as it is quite low-cut.
