How long should a maxi dress be?

Possibly a stupid question but I'm buying a couple of maxi dresses for the summer - I'm new to maxi as a length.

Should they come right down to the floor (am planning to wear them with sandals / flip flops so don't particularly want to be tripping over all the time...)

Or is ankle length acceptable?

On Pinterest, maxi dresses all seem VERY max. Is a maxi dress that ends at your ankles the equivalent ankle flapping half mast trousers? Ie a bit yukky?

I like them floor skimming. I depending on if I m wearing heels or flats I sometimes use tailor tape to temporarily shorten them

Just above floor length, I think they look better long. Touching my ankle bones is a bit short to me
