Long-lasting hair curls

My hair is very straight and whenever I've used tongs in the past the curls seems to have dropped out by the end of the night, no matter what product I put on it. The look I want to achieve is a 1940s, side-swept glamorous curl and I want it to last as long as possible- are heated rollers better than a curling wand/tongs for this?

The only thing that puts me off rollers is that I feel like with a wand I'm in control of the direction of the curl etc- with rollers I would feel like it's in the hands of the gods!

Set it in pin curls with setting lotion, loads of tutorials online.
