Vanity sizing

I've just realised that I'm wearing a pair of Mango trousers that are a size 36 (so, 10, I think) and a vest top and shirt from Primark that are size 8. My hoodie, Bench, is a size 36 also. Given I'm a good stone over my ideal bmi, I know these sizes aren't realistic. Are there any stores that are realistically sized these days?

1960's butterwick pattern gives a dress size 10 as measuring, 31,24,33
Topshop says the same measurements are a uk 4
I think sizes may have inflated a bit

KanyesVest · 20/03/2015 22:36

Bloody hell, really?! I've just measured myself - 36, 32, 39.

I feel sorry for the really tiny petite people. Where can they shop?! I was a size 12 but often need an 8 or 10, being 6ft I know I'm not that size or I'd be much much skinnier. ..

BlueEyedWonder · 20/03/2015 22:48

That would be me passthecake!!
5ft and just over 7 stone.
Tried on a Next petite dress today in size 6; hung off me.
Places like Topshop are less generous.

Wadingthroughsoup · 20/03/2015 22:56

Yes, BlueEyed It must be a nightmare for very petite people like you! I am a size 6 in Next and M&S, an 8 in other places. In reality, I must be a 10-12.

KanyesVest · 20/03/2015 23:11

Next is the best ego-boost ever for sizing. When I was about a stone heavier than I am now my size 10 jeans actually fell off me as I was running after DS. I was proud and shamed in equal measure.

Yep, I am one of those petite people too. Places like top shop are ok, but so many other brands are huge.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 21/03/2015 05:55

I'm a littley (though currently pregnant and elated that I.ca. now fit into 'normal' clothes.

30-21-30 which is a nightmare, a lot of shops don't seem to go.that small anymore or, if they do, then the waist is the same size as the hips?!

Thank god for Zara (mango not so good anymore) and Reiss!

Next sizing is laughable.

burnishedsilver · 21/03/2015 08:44

I have kept a really old (about 17 years old) pair of next jeans in a size 12 that are a bit tight these days. I'm an 8 in their current offerings.

Jewels234 · 21/03/2015 09:24

If you use this link, you put in your measurements and it tells you what size you are in all high street shops. I am 34 29 36 and should not be wearing size 8 trousers but that's what fits. It's ridiculous.

I think sizing needs to be completely overhauled an standardised!

TwoLittleTerrors · 21/03/2015 13:33

I'm small and I shop in topshop, h&m, new look.

i can fit a size 6 top in next. It's a bit loose but I like it more than fitted.

Can't find any trousers in gap, next or m&s. They are ridiculous in size. They all drop off me. Though luckily I am apple shape so with a bigger bum things are easier! Tops are much are accommodating. I wear size 10 topshop jeans normally but I have 2 pairs of size 8 in the wardrobe for skinny days.

meglet · 21/03/2015 13:34

M&S and Next are so guilty of this. I look for the 6 and 8's in those shops these days.
