backpack AND a handbag - will it look stupid?

How bad will it look carrying a backpack and a small handbag at the same time?
I can't fit everything in the handbag and would like to keep hands free (to wrangle a toddler).
I could fit everything in the backpack, but I like the convenience of having phone, wallet etc in the small handbag.

What do you think?
Any backpack suggestions that would make it look less hideous?

I wouldn't. I'd find a back pack with a small front pocket for those essentials and then all the other stuff can go in the main compartment. It's easy enough to slip on and off for access. Although on trains / busy places etc I'd slip it off so you couldn't be easily pick-pocketed.

Well, from what I am seeing at the school gates presently, the fashion is very much smart rucksacks instead of smart handbags.

All the good brands, the North face especially are being worn. Barely a (designer) handbag in sight.

I too have swapped my bag for a karrimor rucksack. But I'm usually on my bike.

Ditch the handbag and treat yourself to a new rucksack! Much more practical.
