engagement ring - anyone had one made?

Dp and I got engaged yesterday - we've been ring shopping today but nothing has caught my eye (and they're so expensive! )

I was wondering if anyone had bought a diamond and had it set?

I'm in Newcastle if anyone has any recommendations!

I had one made.
I went to a local "working jeweller" and described what I wznted. He sketched it out and we took it ftom there. He supplied the diamond and gold though. What about £300, 10 years ago. Huddersfield though, not Newcastle.

BikeRunSki · 15/03/2015 16:46

And congratulations!

Roseformeplease · 15/03/2015 16:48

Yes. The Ringmaker in Perth and Edinburgh.

Congratulations.

MrsEvadneCake · 15/03/2015 16:48

Had mine made 19 years ago in Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. It cost £100 which was his weeks wages then. We had our wedding rings made too.

It's worth doing. You get what you want that way.

MrsEvadneCake · 15/03/2015 16:49

Congratulations too!

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/03/2015 16:50

Yes, 15 years ago but in Australia.

FoodPorn · 15/03/2015 17:04

Congratulations! I did. Initially to get more bang for buck but ultimately to have something of better quality. It's a US website but I'd recommend the Pricescope forums if you'd like to learn more about buying loose stones, custom jewellery and for bling-spiration!

Purpleball · 15/03/2015 17:07

Whatever you do don't buy one online. It was a night, are from start to finish and the ring fell apart a few months later and took ages to sort out. Wish I'd not tried to save him money!

MirandaWest · 15/03/2015 17:13

I had mine made by a jeweller called Jeremy Heber. I got in touch with him online and we discussed what I wanted (we talked on the phone and I sent some photos). Was very straight forward and I have a lovely ring :)

And congratulations :)

Diamonds online. Mine was made through them, I went into the shop to look at the various metals and styles and then we basically got it custom made on the website. I adore my ring.

GinnelsandWhippets · 15/03/2015 17:16

Yep jeweller in macclesfield. DH Gave him a budget and Told him what i wanted. Jeweller sourced the stones and metal, made it, adjusted it to fit and cleans it every time I'm up there. Tis perfect. D J massey in macclesfield.

ZaraW · 15/03/2015 17:16

I did, bought the stone in Bangkok from a reputable jeweller and chose ring design. Worked out much cheaper buying the stone separately. Mine was a tsavorite not diamond though.

ThenBellaDidSomethingVeryKind · 15/03/2015 17:16

I didn't have mine made, but know a few people who used this chap and were v pleased with results

Congratulations!

I had mine made 9 years ago, and he did our wedding rings too. I told him what I wanted and he ordered some stones for us to look at. It was one of the most exciting things to go to the jeweller's when the diamonds had arrived and being able to choose one! I chose an emerald cut and have it channel-set so it's open on the sides but secure. It was £1600 but it is half a carat of diamond.

Don't go for tension-set, the stones are apparently liable to ping out - that's what I've been told anyway!

Asscher cut is lovely too.

mowglik · 15/03/2015 18:04

I've had a couple of rings made by martin oliva in South woodford. He supplied the materials but we came up with the designs together. Well worth it though I had a nightmare with a jewellers in Hatton gardens and had to return that engagement ring which was a mess.
I'd recommend looking at the jewellers work first to see if they have the skill to recreate what you have in mind unless it's a solitaire or very simple design
Congrats!

mayfridaycomequickly · 15/03/2015 18:46

Thanks everyone :-) did you see much price difference? We've got £1000 (which seems a massive amount of money to spend on a ring!)

I had my wife's engagement and wedding bands made by a friend's friend who is a jewellery maker on Hatton garden. Marching platinum bands, large single diamond and smaller diamonds on the shoulders, about 1.2 carat total. Cost price for the materials, mates rates to make it. Spent 1400 8 years ago, insured recently in new home insurance for 6500. Very fortunate!

You can probably make a saving by getting something made to spec in a jewellery quarter in your nearest city.

bryonyelf · 15/03/2015 19:19

I had mine made in the Caribbean where we bought the stones. Didn't take long and dh secretly had an enternity ring made to match.

mayfridaycomequickly · 15/03/2015 19:35

£6.5k? Eek - I'd need to get it sewn onto my finger! My friend's dh paid 10k for hers and I think he's barmy!

I feel guilty at the thought of having a grand on my finger! Blush

Congratulations!!
Yes my husband did 2 years ago in b'hams jewellry quarter. He did good - 2 years on it makes me smile everytime I look at it, several times a day.

He got alot more for his money too, we would not be able to afford the same ring on the high st.

mayfridaycomequickly · 15/03/2015 19:55

That's what i'm hoping for lnd - no jewellery quarter up north that I know of though

We got our wedding rings made last year by Andrew at The Croft Workshop in Durham. If you know Durham his shop is on Fowlers Yard, the little cobbled street that runs along behind the indoor market. www.croftworkshops.com.

I wish I'd found him sooner as I'd have got him to make my engagement ring too. Really recommend him.

mayfridaycomequickly · 15/03/2015 20:09

I do know where you mean msmorgan thank you so much for the recommendation - does he work within my 'price range' do you think? ?

OP posts:
msmorgan · 15/03/2015 20:30

I'd definitely think so, if you give him your budget and an idea of the style you would like he would be able to show you some pics of rings he's made.

I got a rose gold band in a textured finish with 10 diamonds scattered around it. Dh has a wide, textured finish palladium band with a rose gold inner and we paid around £1000, most of that cost was Dh's ring as he's a size z and its a heavy ring.

If you give him a ring he'll arrange an appt and you can look through his portfolios and he shows you examples he's currently working on and the different metals, finishes, stones etc, or just pop in and the design books are there to look at.

msmorgan · 15/03/2015 20:33

If you click on the link the second row of rings down the 2 wedding bands are the same as ours except mine is just rose gold. He has a Facebook page with more pics.
