Finding a decent makeup bag

Why is this so difficult?

I need to carry foundation, loose powder, applicator sponge, two small brushes, two eyeshadows, mascara and a blusher around in my handbag. All the bags I find are too big (washbag size) or too small. Then there's nowhere to keep brushes and sponges separate so everything ends up with a fine coating of black eyeshadow.

And why the giddy shit don't makeup brushes have lids to stop them making a mess?

Has anyone got any decent recommendations? Spending a bit of money if it's a good one is fine. It needs to not taper too much at the top so more of a brick shape IYSWIM.

Marking place. I've got a pencil case type one from boots (far too small) and the others are small washbag type ones with no pockets or just wrong size....

Have a couple of suggestions for you ..

I have the leather LKBennett one. It's £65 but lovely and perfect for popping in a handbag. I also recommend a website called Sew Lomax - they do some lovely quirky ones - you can even design your own! Oh and to be really spendy, check out Smythson.

LK Bennett Kizzy www.lkbennett.com/Accessories/Make-Up-Bags/Kizzy-Leather-Cosmetic-Case/p/ACCKIZZYLEATHERYellowLemon

I LOVE this! The yellow is gorgeous but unfortunately I think it's too narrow.

Smythson Mara cosmetic case www.smythson.com/mara-english-rose-cosmetics-case.html

Vair pretty, bookmarking that one for a birthday treat.

Sew Lomax embroidered makeup bags www.sewlomax.com/collections/make-up-bags

I quite like these, will take a look.

Any other suggestions welcome!

The body shop do a nice set of mini brushes in a case with a mirror

I like this one: www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50214032/

The small pocket on the front is long enough for a Mac eye brush such as a 217 or 266 without them getting damaged.

The bag does taper at the top, but I can still fit the stuff you mentioned in without any issues.

If you can't find anything with that extra compartment, maybe a brush travel case like this would be useful: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/218507124/brush-individual-single-cosmetic-brush
There's also something like Brush Guard - they will protect the brush head but I'm not sure if they'll protect the makeup bag from any colour left in the brush. I've seen them on Amazon.

I have just bought, and am very pleased with, a Dermalogica one from John Lewis.

I can't link on here but if you search 'Dermalogica bag' there are only three - it's the £11 one. Small travel bag I think it's called.

It opens flat if required, has a pocket you can see into and is wipeable. I carry a similar amount of make up to you by the sound of it.

I wanted the Bobbi Brown one, which is a similar size and shape but it was out of stock. That's definitely worth a look as well - very nice.

I got this E.L.F one a while back (but I don't think it's available at their customer services might be able to help).

mowglik · 15/03/2015 08:03

I bought a set of clear zip up bags you get 4 sizes in the set, if you use the medium size one you cAn use a pencil case to store your brushes inside. Finding clear ones so much more practical and they are wipe clean too

MooMinCow · 15/03/2015 08:05

Stupid phone. The 'signature' style. Fits a fair amount in and I like the brushes are separate. Otherwise maybe try a professional brand/store? MAC, Kiko etc

How about something like this with a wrap bit for your brushes?

I have something similar to this:
