Sunglasses: how to choose and where from?

JenniMoo · 13/03/2015 07:37

I have no idea how to choose sunglasses, and usually have 2 small DC assisting while I'm shopping so not a lot of time to decide.
I just need something fairly functional and tough, and not too expensive, that looks ok on me. Around the £20 mark max I should think, as with the DC they only seem to last one summer...
Any ideas where to look and what shapes / styles to look for?

I have expensive ones but also a couple of pairs from Warehouse which are decent for the price. What is your face shape?

thenextday · 13/03/2015 07:52

Monsoon do nice ones for about £15

JenniMoo · 13/03/2015 07:56

I think my face is oval / rectangle.

T k maxx.

Loads and loads of styles. Very reduced.

Or, if not, Boots or Next.

iwantgin · 13/03/2015 11:19

I just buy the £1 glasses in Primark. Some of them I cna make last for a few years actually. I tend to buy a few pairs and leave them in the car/DH's car/upstairs/downstairs. Never too far away.

They have the UV protection symbol on them -so I think they are okay.

JenniMoo · 13/03/2015 11:22

That sounds like a plan iwantgin, one in each bag and I the car! I'll make a trip to big town and have a look there, as well as Tkmaxx etc!

At only a couple of quid or so it doesn't matter if you don't like them all that much either.

It's when you want to spend more that they have to be just right. Which is tricky.

squoosh · 13/03/2015 12:30

I always get mine at TK Maxx. I like the Wayfarer shape.

Make sure if you're buying ultra cheap ones that they give you adequate UV protection otherwise you could damage your eyesight.

mewkins · 13/03/2015 13:55

I got some nice ones from tk maxx. Boots are also good and normally do a half price promotion starting soon.

Minshu · 13/03/2015 16:50

I was also going to recommend tk maxx. A pair of sunglasses is possibly the one item that i enjoy shopping for with DD (5) for company, possibly because tk maxx always has a few bonkers pairs for us to try on alongside more realistic ones Grin

ToffeeLatteplease · 13/03/2015 18:16

Another vote for TX maxx. they have a rating system that explains what you need to know. in terms of eye protection they are fantastic. The lens are not quite as good as my incredibly expensive oakleys but not enough to justify the incredible difference in cost and I'm not terrified the kids will bust them

ToffeeLatteplease · 13/03/2015 18:21

The primark sunglasses are fine for dull days but if you have any light sensitivity (e.g. headaches in sunlight) they will not do at all. Also from memory they work mostly by making everything darker which doesn't make them as good for driving

meglet · 13/03/2015 18:23

tk maxx.

Graciescotland · 13/03/2015 18:32

TK maxx again.

JenniMoo · 12/04/2015 20:16

I still haven't got any. Tkmaxx were all too much for the time being. I'm thinking of trying boots.
Any other suggestions?

beanandspud · 12/04/2015 20:53

Not really a S&B suggestion but it's worth making sure that whatever you buy has a CE mark.

<a class="break-all" href="//*www.which.co.uk/news/2011/08/high-street-sunglasses-fail-british-standards--------262336/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this is a good article explaining that cheaper sunglasses are fine but they need to meet certain standards otherwise you could end up up damaging your eyes.

CointreauVersial · 12/04/2015 20:56

Boots always have a decent selection and are well-made and CE rated.

JenniMoo · 12/04/2015 21:08

Bean and spud, the last know is broken, could you repost? I'm interested in reading more on that.

Link, the link is broken...

I've found the page, if anyone's interested;
www.which.co.uk/news/2011/08/high-street-sunglasses-fail-british-standards--------262336/

I was surprised to see 2 out of 3 primary pairs passed,so I've bought 3 pairs today and will examine them carefully at home to see if they're any good, and return if necessary.

Primark

The best way to find the shape that suits you is to try loads on, go to the Sun Glasses Hut because they have tons of different styles.

Then when you've found the shape you can find what you want on the high street. I just got a pair of Moschino sun glasses in TK Max for £25!

Lardylassnomore · 14/04/2015 18:18

Tk Maxx or wait for Tatler magazine as they usually have a nice pair as a freebie in summer time. Given that magazines are one month ahead it shouldn't be too long to see if there will be a freebie pair.
