An annual thread as hairy appendages emerge - which is best epilator these days?

I have a very, very old epilady, and was thinking about treating myself to an upgrade.

I'm mildly baffled by the choice: there seem to be at least 5 versions of the silk epil alone.

So I was wondering if there were any happy epilators who would be kind and let me know which one they have, or at least which features are worth having?

I just got ingrown hairs which added to my hairy plight. Sounds like your legs are made of sterner stuff though. Good luck!

I have a Philips Satin Perfect which is fine. It comes with lots of attachments but I haven't a clue what they are for as I've never used them. If I was replacing it, I'd go for a basic model.

Thanks!

I think I'm quite lucky about I growing hairs, because I've had only a couple that I've noticed in decades of epilating.

I know what you mean about going for a simpler model. I've oodles of gadgets that I only ever use in their basic modes. And of course, fewer features usually means cheaper!

A little bump to see if anyone else had any thoughts (I'm off into town in about an hour)

I've got a Braun silk-epil 7 that I bought last year. I really like it but I've never had one before so can't compare. I haven't got any ingrown hairs yet.

TellingTheBees · 14/03/2015 09:51

It looks very similar to this one. Same attachments but a different product number.

Sorry to hijack but does anyone know why some people get ingrown hairs and others don't?? Has it anything to do with the epilator you're using? I love my epilators effects but not the ingrown hairs (despite exfoliating).

Piratespoo · 14/03/2015 10:02

Do epilaters hurt? My only experience is as a 16 year old quite a few years ago! and it hurt then...have things moved on or is it still painful? Can anyone recommend a cheaper model? Do hairs from back more slowly than shaving?

AnguaResurgam · 14/03/2015 10:25

Hairs are pulled out by the roots, so re growth time is similar to waxing (several weeks). No idea why some people get lots of ingrown hairs and other people next to none.

Yes, some people find it hurts. It was never that bad for me (lucky) and now I've been doing it for years, it really doesn't hurt at all.

I'm off out now, to see what seems to be the best vfm at the huge Boots. I'll report back later (in case anyone cares).

Excellent work, Angua.

Now: we need someone to work on de-horning our heels

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2015 15:17

I don't get ingrowing hairs & I don't bother with exfoliating. I have very fine hair, so that might make a difference. I also don't find it hurts, probably because I've been doing it for years. Most of my leg hair has given up the ghost at this stage and doesn't bother growing back any more!

Piratespoo my first epilator was a very simple, cheap one from Lidl - it worked fine. If epilating hurts, try a couple of paracetamol an hour before epilating or a large glass of wine helps too

AnguaResurgam · 14/03/2015 16:32

I got a Remington, which appears to have the same features as a silk epil 5 but which had a big discount (cost less than a silk epil 3).

It's fine! The head is narrower than my ancient old Phillips, but it took less time to do lower legs as it grabbed the hairs better. And the light made it much easier see what I was doing when I was doing the backs.

DD wandered in whilst I was trying it out: 'Oh, is it that time of year again?' Grin
