Is there really a red lipstick for everyone?

I remember reading somewhere that there is a shade of red to suit everyone - is this really true, and if so, how do I find the right shade for me?

I've never worn lipstick (well, apart from the black stuff in my gothic yoof, which definately did not flatter my complexion!), and would like to try it out. Any advice?

Lipstick Queen - Medieval. Try it!

I'm fair skinned with freckles but always wear foundation and bronzer and find darker reds suit me. I love the brighter ones but they make me look like a hooker. The Kate Moss ones are good

bunsnroses1 · 10/03/2015 17:14

That looks a good shade sleep. I'm crap at telling if something suits me or not and will merrily wander around looking ridiculous Smile I think I need to go somewhere and have someone tell me which shade would suit.

The Boots No.7 counters do a lipstick matching service now. I got the foundation matching done and it was perfect

FrugalFashionista · 10/03/2015 17:51

Yes, but it may not be a bright red. Chanel Cambon (now sadly discontinued) looks like a true red on my lips, I need a bluish/ pinkish undertone (cool toned pale skin). Many warm reds age me and make my teeth look funny.

Remember that 'red suits everyone' is a marketing slogan from an era when there were really few options...

For me, red lipstick is an attention grabber. I love lipstick but on most days I want to blend in and wear more neutral pinks and glosses.

I have the same colouring as Frugal and the lipsticks that suit me are, indeed blue / pink based, and some budget options are the Maybelline Color Drama lip pencils (Nars dupes) in Red Essential and Keep It Classy, also Maybelline Colour Sational (or something like that) in Pleasure Me Red (cringe). My go to nude pink lipstick is Loreal Color Riche in 302.

Here's a good guide www.lisaeldridge.com/video/25389/ultimate-guide-to-red-lips/#.VP8z63kgG0d.

I think there is a red to suit every skin tone. Though my personal opinion is that a very wide and thin lipped mouth doesn't look it's best in red.

bunsnroses1 · 10/03/2015 18:31

I've blue eyes, pale skin, freckles and midbrown hair with gold tones - does it sound like I need a blue/pinky red?
I think I will pop in to Boots and see what they suggest, are they usually quite good?

I don't know if I'd ever be brave enough to wear it out of the house - after 36 years of never wearing lipstick I think it might take a while to get used to!

Is your skin pink or yellow based?

noddyholder · 12/03/2015 12:01

I can't find one that I don't feel over done in and I do wear and love make up!

Lottapianos · 12/03/2015 12:46

'I don't know if I'd ever be brave enough to wear it out of the house - after 36 years of never wearing lipstick I think it might take a while to get used to!'

It will take time to get used to. I went from a lifetime of neutral lips to getting really into loud lipstick colours a couple of years ago. If you want to try red, you just have to go for it! You will jump every time you look in a mirror for the first couple of days but after that you get used to it. That Lisa Eldridge video is really good

FrugalFashionista · 12/03/2015 12:52

Bun if your skin has warm undertones like your hair, go for a red that veer a bit tomato/ orange/ brick. Try the lipstick matching service and tell them that you are new to this.

Bright bold red is quite scary, so one way to ease your way in is to wear a midi shade that is a bit deeper than your lips but not full-on. That way you can practice the technique too.

After more than a year of wearing mostly glosses and neutral MLBB colors I've started wearing bright fuchsia lipstick. It's more high maintenance but feels really fresh and great for spring!

noddyholder · 12/03/2015 13:49

I used to wear it in my late teens but from 20 until now 49 (weeps) I have just worn neutrals. I have worn red a few times very recently and felt a bit clownish Love it on everyone else though especially with very little other make up

yazzy85 · 12/03/2015 15:53

Just bought Medival after someone recommended it on another thread. It's amazing! Sheer but so flattering Smile

WagonWheel · 12/03/2015 15:58

LOVE red lips. My favourite look is a dewy skin, very neutral eye (one shade, like BB's Bone,) and a bright orange/red lip. I am half Oriental and it gives real brightness to my skin which can tend towards the walking dead sallow.

I wouldn't pair a matte skin with red, unless you're very youthful looking, as it can look a bit overpowering (think 80's Robert Palmer videos).

My advice would be to use as a stain initially, so the colour is a bit diffused, then work up to wearing it more heavily in the evening until you feel confident with it. Medieval is a great "trainer" red as it is naturally more of a stain. My favourites are Jungle Red by Nars and Lady Danger by MAC. I've heard that "Tango" by new brand Delilah is a good introductory red, although I believe it's more suited to skins with a warmer undertone.

proteins · 12/03/2015 16:20

I like Nars Jungle Red too, it's the right balance between blue and orange-based reds. It's a little dry, but NARS does a similar-ish shade in gloss, so I dot a tiny bit to keep it from feeling dry.

Medieval is really nice, I think of it as trainer wheels for red lipstick :)

daftyburd · 12/03/2015 16:24

When I first started wearing red I bought a red Clinique chubby stick. Started sheer then worked up to the bright red lipsticks. They were happy to let me try a few on at Mac. Currently wearing a limited edition Viva la glam red by Rihanna for Mac.
