Afternoon,

My latest pair of Converse are about to give up the ghost, so need replacements. Last few pairs of trainers have been Converse, but wondering what else is out there. I'd usually wear them with skinny jeans, or maybe a denim skirt in hot weather. I did come across adidas gazelles like I had in 1997 and thought oooh, but don't know if they'd look stupidly dated now. Any ideas for decent trainers/trainer like shoes? I'm not bothered about brand particularly. If it helps, I'm 36, would usually wear them when running around after small people (currently one toddler, another one brewing for later this year) so don't want to look too much like I'm trying to look too young, if that makes sense.

Thanks!

I've been wearing grey / fluro highlight Nike Internationals for a year now. so much more comfortable than converse, faster too.

I wear them with skinny jeans, I suspect they might look a bit like clown feet sometimes. but I walk miles a day and plimsole styles don't cut it.

This season I'm after the liberty print Nikes.

meglet · 09/03/2015 13:59

I'm 40 btw.

I've ordered a pair of nike pegasus 83 online, I have two little toddlers and find them very comfortable for chasing around after them or going to the shops, park, etc. They don't look bad with jeans either. New Balance trainers are also quite fashionable at the moment.

Hi, yes I second New Balance. I don't use them for running, but they are v comfortable. Much more so than converse. I find converse too flat. I wear orthotics and they fit in perfectly. I also have a pair of old and battered Onitsuka Tigers. They have lasted well for years. I love them.
I am 44 with an active 8 yrs old ds. Trainers are pretty fashionable at the mo, which is great for not looking like mutton dressed as lamb! There are some lovely colours available. I got mine in Office.
Also lusting after Liberty nikes.
Hth.

I like the Puma suede sneakers which are normally reduced in Branch 309. I don't actuslky have any because they are narrowish and my feet are very wide, but I understand that they are 100 times more comfortable than Converse.

OneLittleLady · 09/03/2015 18:51

gazelles and stan smiths are very 'in' right now. I like converse and vans, vans are very comfy though I find I have to cut the elastic out of the skate shoe style ones as it constricts my feet and makes them hurt but once i take the elastic out, they are perfect. I do find they run half a size large in the skate style though as they are a US 7.5 in a UK 5 unlike cons which are a US 7 in a UK 5. if that makes sense (sizes are examples!)

stripytees · 09/03/2015 19:08

meglet and yazzy can I ask how the sizing is with those Nikes? I have to size up in New Balance and wondered if it's the same in Nike?

Skinheadmermaid · 09/03/2015 19:20

I've been living in a pair of black nike runners since i bought them a couple of months ago. I bloody love them. I'm going to get another, similar pair (i'm feeling the grey pegasus-or burgundy if i can find!) as i don't want to wear them out.
I've been wearing converse on and off for 17 years but they do my feet in now as I walk so much.

Skinheadmermaid · 09/03/2015 19:20

Stripy Nike are true to size.

stripytees · 09/03/2015 19:27

Thanks Skin. I'm usually 4.5 in brands that do half sizes but 4 everywhere else apart from 5 in New Balance. So 4 in Nike?

Cocolepew · 09/03/2015 19:44

BikeRunSki I got an email earlier saying Branch 309 is closed down. I was gutted, I buy loads of trainers in there. DD has the Puma suede, I have the high top version, they are very comfy.
I put Birkinstock 3/4 insoles in Converse to make them more comfortable.

The Converse Star Player are great, I had them in blue and wore them to death.

BikeRunSki · 09/03/2015 20:07

Oh no! I loved Branch 309. I didn't get an email, maybe they'll stay open for me.

Also got the Branch 309 closure email , I'm gutted too. Just ordered some more trainers from there on Saturday, luckily got my dispatch email today so hoping my last bargainous shoes will arrive soon.
( Nikes , as I also was in a Converse rut)

yazzy85 · 09/03/2015 21:18

The Nikes are definitely true to size. They are so comfortable! With New Balance I had to go up a size but Nike are spot on.

meglet · 09/03/2015 21:42

I think Nike are true to size too. I fit the same size Nike as Clarks.

Darkhorsefor1 · 09/03/2015 22:25

I've noticed the trendy young things at work have all ditched their obligatory converse for Nike or New Balance.

I'm still scuzzing about in my vile sketchers because the job frequently entails stepping in wee. Outside of work, yes I like the Nike look.

butterfliesinmytummy · 10/03/2015 03:06

I have some Adidas superstars in white with snakeskin stripes and turquoise laces, they are super comfy and make my feet look small but fit really true to size. Love them, look great with rolled jeans.

Princesspond · 10/03/2015 12:11

I can't believe branch 309 has closed down. Do you think they'll still do ex display through Schuh? (the bargains I've had sob!)

Darkhorsefor1 · 10/03/2015 17:13

Ooh butterflies where did you get those? They sound lovely, plus the smaller foot thing is interesting. My feet look weirdly huge in trainers, I think it's because I have size six clompers even though I'm short.

InTheWhiteRoom · 10/03/2015 17:21

i have nike air max 90s and nike huarache

I wear them with super skinny jeans or faux leather leggings

5446 · 10/03/2015 17:23

I just bought the Nike Air Force Ones Ultra Force in low, the white ones.

Absolutely live in them.

butterfliesinmytummy · 11/03/2015 02:28

I live in the USA and can't find a UK stockist, there is a pic here though, second to bottom row on the left. I have size UK6 feet too but they look huge in trainers.....
