Why don't I like ankle boots with knee length skirts?

I think of ankle boots as for wearing with jeans/trousers not skirts & certainly not with anything knee length. Can anyone persuade me otherwise. I have a couple of dresses that my flat knee length boots look clumpy with so I need an alternative and I don't think it's warm enough to go into shoes yet!

I think they look ok if the ankle boot is heeled, not flat. I wear them a lot with opaques and knee length skirts.

mooth · 08/03/2015 20:53

It's probably best to wear what you like. I think all kinds of boots and shoes look good it all depends how the person carries them off.

Happy36 · 08/03/2015 20:54

I agree with you. Ankle boots only with a short dress or skirt (i.e. well above knee), otherwise knee high boots, or shoes, if the skirt is longer. Not a hard and fast rule but generally this is what I´d do.

Lovewearingjeans · 08/03/2015 20:55

Possibly because the top of the ankle boot cuts your leg off in a weird way? I can't wear low cut ankle boots with skirts, but can wear longer ones.

TenuousGrip · 08/03/2015 21:00

Depends on your legs! I've got quite shapely/muscular calfs and am quite short so an ankle boot with a knee length skirt on me make my legs look like tree trunks. I do have these which look ok with a short tube skirt (above the knee to show a bit more leg shape) or alternatively with a flared out skirt that cuts off an inch or so above the boot, as long as the top half is fitted though! This time of year I'm mostly in knee high black leather boots or ballet flats with tights.

TendonQueen · 08/03/2015 21:02

Totally agree though I have no style law to back me up. I just think ankle boots look horrible with knee length skirts. Calves either look chunky or overly skinny, it's not at all flattering. I file it under other things that fashion has at times persuaded many people of the value of - the skirt-trouser of the 90s, the puffball of the 80s - that actually just don't look good. Just go with wearing shoes.

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 08/03/2015 21:02

I wear DMs with all my different length dresses/skirts

FrugalFashionista · 08/03/2015 21:04

I've never liked ankle boots with a skirt, makes my feet look awkward. I have reasonably long legs but still I feel boots cut my leg off in an unflattering place. A very short mini may be an exception. I saw today a fabulously dressed young woman who wore a cropped shearling coat belted with a chain and a padlock, a flirty short black skirt, sheer black tights and black stacked heel ankle boots. She looked fab.

FrugalFashionista · 08/03/2015 21:06

The young pretty women here wear DMs and Clergerie type thick soled clompy boots with very short skirts and Balenciaga bags - usually all black - that looks great.

SirChenjin · 08/03/2015 21:07

I agree - I have only seen one or two women really carry off the ankle boot/skirt thing and they were the blessed types who could wear a bin bag and look gorgeous. As Tendon says, it's a look we've been sold which really belongs in fashion Room 101.

cashewnutty · 08/03/2015 21:09

My DD2 wears flat ankle boots with short or knee length skirts but she is age 17 and 5ft 9inches tall with amazing long skinny legs. She looks fab in everything (not jealous much)

TendonQueen · 08/03/2015 21:13

Glad you agree sirChen! Under-21s don't count in style rulings because they can generally make a bin bag look good.

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 08/03/2015 21:14

Ha ha I'm over 30 and 5ft nothing - but will continue with the DMs skirt/dresses (no balegnica bag though Wink)

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 08/03/2015 21:14

Balenciaga even (must be really getting old!)

I don't like this look either, it looks all wrong to me. I don't even like ankle boots with leggings.

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 09/03/2015 00:01

It's cos that combo makes legs look shorter/wider by disrupting the outline of the leg. Clumpy boots can redress that by making the leg look skinny by comparison. Ones with a v shape dip at the front can create the illusion of length by drawing the eye down and so again, don;t make the legs look shorter. Those short cowboyish ones can look good with a floral dress if you get the proportions right. But probably not a knee length one- need to show a bit of thigh to maintain the length.

Maybe try a shoe boot (perhaps a slingback one), especially ones with a dip at the front. Maintains the leg silhouette better and, again, the dip will draw the eye down creating optical illusion of length.

Milllli · 09/03/2015 00:20

Cankle effect maybe. See Cameron Diaz in today's Daily Mail. If she can't make ankle boots and a dress look good then I don't know who can Confused

Twinklestein · 09/03/2015 01:05

You're right OP they look ridiculous.

Twinklestein · 09/03/2015 01:06

Good example of it's a bad idea.

Why don't I like ankle boots with knee length skirts?
Twinklestein · 09/03/2015 01:07

^why

Twinklestein · 09/03/2015 01:08

Ankle boots can look fine with minis if you have long slim legs.

coffeenut · 09/03/2015 03:01

totally agree with awfuldaughter ...

cameron looks terrible because of the type of ankle boots and skirt (and the tights). They actually make her look a bit frump and yes, cankles.

I wear midi/knee-length pencil skirts/dresses with heeled chelsea boots (clumpy style to make legs look skinnier!). No tights.

Floisme · 09/03/2015 07:34

I wear them all the time, normally with a just below-the-knee tube skirt. I think they look good so nerr.

Trinette · 11/03/2015 13:20

I don't like the look either, so don't feel bad, and please do not convince yourself that you have to like something, just because others do. I think it has to do with proportions, and as previous posters have pointed out, if the skirt isn't very short, ankle boots give you a strange silhouette as they visually cut off and shorten your leg line.
