Wedding guests wearing long dresses - yay or nay?

What's your view on wedding guests wearing long dresses?

I have two gorgeous long dresses which I have never had the chance to wear. One is lilac and one red. They are both silky type fabric with lace sleeves.

I have two weddings coming up and was wondering whether it would be ok to wear these dresses?

One is this dress (not in ivory though!)

I've just been for a mosey on the Ghost sale pages too - just bagged a dress down from £195 to £35!

OP, the dresses are gorgeous but just a bit too glam and too up-stagey for a wedding, unless it's a black tie at a Downton type stately home. Could you shorten them or would it break your heart?

What is everyone buying from Ghost?!

I am in favour of long dresses at weddings.

actually, I think they would be fine at a certain type of wedding - very formal, in a city, in autumn or winter, with men in black tie or morning dress. Not so much in a traditional English country wedding in May.

polyhymnia · 07/03/2015 22:14

Lovely dresses but no for a wedding , for reasons PPs have given. I don't think you'd feel comfortable in that style .

DonkeysYears · 07/03/2015 22:30

I bought the'Hatty' black dress.

OublietteBravo · 08/03/2015 08:23

I bought this

If you wear a giant posh hat you won't be 'mistaken' for a bridesmaid.

Minisoksmakehardwork · 08/03/2015 08:43

I'd wear it. I don't think it's formal enough for the black/white tie dos I go to. I've got ball gowns for that sort of thing.

The dress you have there could easily look good at a wedding/evening do. Tbh if you like it, are comfortable in it and definitely aren't wearing Ivory, you'll be fine. It's all in the accessories.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 08/03/2015 08:47

I would totally wear the red one to the posh wedding!

Loads of people wore long dresses to my wedding, nice summery ones. I couldn't have cared less.

HermioneWeasley · 08/03/2015 08:58

You bought them as your potential wedding dresses, and you want to know if they're suitable for someone else's wedding?!

Wind up, surely?

DontDrinkandFacebook · 08/03/2015 10:40

I agree with Panzee if the Ghost dress has been dyed black you could buy a very large black hat and black shoes, or a black pillbox hat and just about pull it off. But I do think the style is quite bridal so be careful how you accessorise it.

DontDrinkandFacebook · 08/03/2015 10:41

Sorry, I meant if the Ghost dress has been dyed red.

Obviously if it was black I would not be recommending that you turned up head to toe in black looking like you were going to a funeral. Confused

HermioneWeasley · 08/03/2015 10:47

That dress dyed red, with black hat and black shoes will look a tad Cruella deVille, surely?

KatieKaye · 08/03/2015 10:51

Sorry, but it's an evening dress and it would be really strange to wear it during the day.

If you bought it for your own wedding, then you are going to run the risk of turning up at someone else's wedding wearing what looks like a wedding dress that has been dyed a different colour. Which would be a little strange.

Ilovenannyplum · 08/03/2015 11:23

I ALWAYS wear long maxi dresses to weddings. Nobody has mistaken me for a bridesmaid yet Wink

Ilovenannyplum · 08/03/2015 11:24

(I would wear it, it's a beautiful dress and I bet you feel a million dollars in it)
