Padded coat or ski jacket - which is warmer??

Hi ladies, I'm not sure if Style and Beauty is exactly the right place for this question, but I'm a bit too shy for Chat, and everyone on here is usually so helpful!

My MiL has very kindly offered to buy a new winter coat for DS after his old one fell apart. We live in the countryside and are always outdoors, so above all it needs to be warm. I usually buy him padded coats like this one in Next

MiL has gone to the outlet centre and bought him this Tog24 ski jacket. www.tog24.com/scoot-kids-milatex-ski-jacket-dark-midnight.html

It feels thinner than his usual jackets - but maybe it is filled with some super-efficient thermal material? Which do you think would be warmer? (MiL has kept the receipt so can change to Tog24 jacket if needs be).

Personally I wear a ski jacket as it keeps the wind out much better than my padded one when I work outdoors, but for kids I buy padded as the ski ones lose their waterproofness in the wash.

The tog24 one is more weatherproof. Nothing worse than a damp padded coat.

Thanks for your help ladies. I think we are going with the ski jacket, DS (4.5) took the tags off when he was trying it on before I realised what he was doing! He says its warm, and really likes it.
