Taking the car and the kids through Europe over the summer. Need a bag for days out and for when we stop off on the way. We will be traveling for six days until we arrive in Italy then travelling back. What the hell do i get? A rucksack? Nothing too big as i want this to be my handbag type thing. What do you suggest?

I have a medium size rucksack and an smallish oilcloth messenger bag, bulky stuff like jumper/fold up waterproofs in the backpack, valuables in the messenger bag.

Thanks for that. Links to good tried and tested bags would also be great! Smile

I live in Italy and travel a lot. I use a Herschel denim backpack for hauling my essentials from the car to hotel/ rented house. Don't keep your money and phone in a backpack, pickpocketing is really common here. I have a small crossbody bag for my wallet, keys, and phone. When the children were smaller, I used a holdall. The less I carry, the happier I feel. Need water - stop at a bar (or at a drinking fountain.) Need a map? On your phone, or ask someone for directions...

A friend who has lived all over the world recommended always keeping your essentials in a plastic carrier bag from a local supermarket. You will fit right in and nobody is going to steal that.

Me, I have had 2 bags a bit like this. I have had my Samsonite backpack erm about 20 years or so

I met someone the otherday who had one of these Sakroots lots of other syles..

She got it in TKmaxx ,(I asked her!) The only one they have in right now is this one.

i've bought bags from Macys before , the good thing aboutthemis you paythe tax upfront so no nasty surprises..

Similar rational to FF

Sakroots also do cool sandals and espadrilles I see....

This utterly unsexy bag was really useful when DC were smaller. Holds your essentials + an umbrella + two children's cardies and your guidebook. An extra benefit: tall dark strangers will totally ignore you Wink

Marc Jacobs Natasha and Ukita are of course more upmarket versions of that sad little bag...

Thanks for all the tips. Ive heard to be vigilant about pick pocketing and making yourself look a target. Yes, i worried about a backpack being too accessible. We are travelling to my aunts house in Italy. She has said the same. I know that you need to be careful but you have really brought it home to me. Think i will need to really consider what to do for the best.
