Ashamed of my beauty product hoard!

IPokeBadgers · 01/03/2015 15:04

I have spent some time this morning trying to sort and tidy my beauty and toiletries cupboard and I am actually feeling veryShock andBlush at the sheer volume of stuff that I have, much of it lovely and expensive and unopened!

I reckon it could take me a couple of years to get through it all!

Buying make up as well as lovely bath and shower stuff seems to have become my go to/default pick me up when I want to impulse buy...... but seeing the hoard has brought me down.

anyone else like this and are there any threads that would encourage me to stop buying stuff and use all the lovely products that I have?

please tell me I am not the only person like this?

Most of the samples I have left are the free with magazine variety and I having read the ingredients on the back of some Garnier moisturisers I don't want to put them on my face! Sorry Garnier! Love your BB cream though.

I haven't been thinking about body/bath products, just skin care, really, and maybe I should! If I count bubble bath, etc., it might motivate me more!

Annarose2014 · 07/05/2015 09:13

I am getting nowhere fast with my Clinique Precious Posy blusher. Its one of my favourite blushers of all time - so pretty and natural - but 10 years old so has to go.

I've been using nothing else since March and still haven't hit pan (and its one of my most used blushers of my whole adult life). Talk about good value for money! Grin

I'm determined though - I've promised myself one of those new Max Factor mineralised ones to replace it and am getting very impatient. They look amaaaaaazing.

Nabootique · 07/05/2015 09:14

The Creme Puff ones? They are fab!

Paperblank · 08/05/2015 18:44

I had a Clinique blusher once and it lasted for at least five years and that was with daily use. You are so right that they are value for money - I've got one and I think it will outlive me!

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 09/05/2015 10:32

Another empty to report. A Bayliss and Harding foot cream. It was nice and did seem to do the job. I'll possibly repurchase at some point in the future but have a Burts Bees one waiting in the cupboard to use up first. Slowly using stuff up but I suspect I have enough body lotion and soap to last about five years.

I have never used up either eye shadow or blusher. I'm glad I'm not alone.

ememem84 · 09/05/2015 12:06

Finally used up the black pepper body lotion!! Slathered the last (almost a quarter) of the bottle on today. Bottle binned.

Not sure im liking the bb cream. But persevering with it. It feels a bit grainy (I think that's the right word).

Am doing well with hoard of make up. A lot has been sold on local Facebook selling page. Only the stuff in definetly sure I won't use again. And I'm working through the rest. Have urban decay naked 2 big pallet to get through. Have issues with some of the darker shades. So although I love the brand I won't be buying the big pallet again - found out they do nearer smaller ones.

One empty this week:

Redken All Soft shampoo and conditioner (the ones in the gold packaging): I really liked these and they did make my hair really clean, soft and shiny. However, since using them I've started to get ever so slight dandruff (gross I know!) and I don't know whether it's the Redken products or something else (e.g. I recently started taking antibiotics for my skin and it could be them apparently...) Giving them the benefit of the doubt re: dandruff, I would probably get these again if I was feeling happy to splash out a bit more for haircare, but on the whole I think that there are a lot of good more budget options available.

I've been working from home all week long and as a result literally haven't worn makeup since last Saturday. As a result no make-up empties this week surprise surprise!

ememem84 · 09/05/2015 12:46

Am off out riding today. And have put on a proper face (anything to use it up!!)

Am hoping this week I can finish up the bb cream, and maybe a mascara.

Am nearing the end if a clarins face wash too so hopefully I can use this up. It's only a small tube but has lasted for ages.

lemonteaplease · 09/05/2015 14:06

I'm glad that I've found a group of ladies in the same position as myself... I will have to get through my stash eventually... Grin I guarantee that never will I be so moisturised, hair free, and conditioned after this 'use up spree' is over!

Costacoffeeplease · 09/05/2015 14:16

My first empty for a while - a massive 105g Elemis pro collagen cleansing balm, it has lasted forever, so doing this does show that a lot of things are actually good value and I like this a lot (I think I have another full size and a trial size in stock).

Going to start a massive pot of Rodial cleanser now, and am nearly finished the last of my perfect and protect serums so will start the Rodial face oil too. I work from home so wasn't wearing make up every day, but have decided to at least put on eyeliner/mascara/lipstick or gloss so stuff will get used up quicker

IPokeBadgers · 10/05/2015 02:53

Another empty: a Wild About Beauty rose water illuminating serum. Been on the go for ages but had "misplaced" it amongst the hoard Blush Think I bought another one not long after I bought this one, so imagine there is a spare somewhere. If I'm honest, nice enough product but not sure it is worth the full retail price of 22quid!

Does anyone find that as you're trying to get through all your products... you use more than what you usually would? Not sure if this is cheating, but I'm a culprit Grin

ememem84 · 10/05/2015 11:56

Yes!! See my above post re body lotion...!! Haha!

I don't think it's cheating. It'd be cheating if things wear just tipped away.

Using more than usual is fine.

I actually find that usually if I've spent £££ on a really nice product I use less of it. To justify the cost to myself.

mowglik · 10/05/2015 14:29

Going to finish a tub of l'occitane jasmine body butter - lovely soft scent would def purchase for winter

Finished a sample of Vichy idealia serum - odd scent, smelt a bit like air freshener and it looked nice and shimmery from the tube but didn't feel it did much for my skin

Been experimenting with foundations and now have to many samples and spares. Is it cheating if I give them away?

Plus side my skin is looovely and soft just in time for my holiday later this month :D

Paperblank · 10/05/2015 15:50

Whoop whoop another empty to report. I have finished one of the gigantic bottles of clinique clarifying lotion this morning Grin

This has been a staple part of my skin care regime for 23 years. I cannot be without it. Thankfully there was another bottle in my stash!

FrugalFashionista · 11/05/2015 06:44

I'm at our summer home and found a jar of Noxzema 2% salicylate pads from the late 1990s. They still sting. I guess I have been acid toning quite a bit longer than I remembered Wink Also vaguely remember pH balancing my cleanser in the mid-1980s but I have either used up or binned the stuff. In cosmetics, no trend ever truly goes away.

I did find a depressing mini-hoard of products here, and a couple at my mother's place too. Am I beyond help?

Paperblank · 11/05/2015 07:56

Frugal - most definitely not! I have a skincare and make up kit at my parent's house. Saves me carting more stuff with me when I visit.

The thing is that now I've admitted the size of my stash I really don't want to buy any more "stuff".

Nabootique · 11/05/2015 08:24

I actually have an empty!

It's the Vitamin C spray/spritz thing from the Body Shop. I was using it as a hydrating toner, but some days it made me a bit sticky or shiny. I think it's too glycerin heavy for me, so I won't repurchase.

jjwhite · 11/05/2015 23:02

Nabootique - I had that Vit C face spray too - I found the orange scent was really overpowering and artificial and agree about the sticky look.. I think I gave it to my sister in the end! If you're looking for a hydrating spray to replace it with I'm currently using the Clinique moisture surge one and it's the first 'hydrating toner' I've found and liked... Weird cos I'm really not a fan of most Clinique skincare that I've tried... Anyway, given we're on a mission to reduce our beauty hoards I shouldn't be recommending new products I suppose!

Another (random but beauty-related empty): a huge tub of omega 3 supplements that had vit e and other 'skin' vitamins in. So hard to know whether these did anything... My nails/hair grow extremely quickly anyway, my spots seem to have largely cleared up with the antibiotics I'm on and it's starting to get warmer here so my dry skin has gone away recently... Maybe the omega pills worked or maybe it's a combination of multiple things. So hard to know and I probably won't repurchase unless I suddenly end up with withered skin and brittle nails in the next couple of weeks after stopping the pills!

Talking of supplements this is another thing I seem to have an endless stash of... Mainly 'skin' vitamins and multivits but also a whole bunch of random ones that I must have decided I 'needed' at some stage or other and then given up on... iron, zinc, magnesium, evening primrose, vit a among others. anyone tried any of these and if so what did you think? should I bother trying to use them up!?

Nabootique · 12/05/2015 09:11

I have actually tried to buy that one jj as it sounds fab but I tried three department stores and none of them had it! Currently using this, which is nice.

Annarose2014 · 12/05/2015 11:25

One good side effect of trying to use up makeup is that now I wear a full face every day! Its making me feel a bit less slovenly and its bloody marvellous if I accidentally meet an old school friend in a shop.

I'm repurposing my Bobbi Brown undereye corrector (it creases so I don't like it) as an all over face concealer. Its too pale of course, but then I cover it with a powder thats a bit too dark and it balances out. Have hit serious pan on both and they will be finished before the month is out. Very exciting!

Eliza22 · 12/05/2015 11:50

Two Lancome GWP eye serum/creams. Gone. Not replacing as now would only buy the Vichy one. So good for lashes!

Will have to buy a new blusher...a matte one. At 53 my shimmery Clinique ones I've worn and repurchased for years are too sparkly for daytime. Shame, cause the shades suit me (Iced Lotus) but way too shimmery for Sainsburys on a damp Tuesday morning!

ememem84 · 12/05/2015 20:39

Never too old for shimmer!!

Today I have finished off a clarins peach water toner. Lovely stuff. I have a new one in my spares box so happy about that.

Have taken a stash of makeup and cosmetics into work - hand cream, spare make up bag, perfume and have put them on/in my desk. Have also dropped off a hand cream in works ladies loos. So hopefully....someone will use it!

GingerLemonTea · 12/05/2015 20:48

Have finished a sample pot of some long forgotten facial exfoliator, St Tropez mousse and gift with purchase no7 Day Sorbet cream which I'm sure gave me spots.
No repurchases. I do like the St Tropez mousse but use it so rarely now.

FrugalFashionista · 12/05/2015 20:57

No empties but making steady progress - using my bronze eye palette and almost finished lip products every day.

My Korean obsession is increasing the number of jars in my bathroom. However, I am using them constantly, so it looks like there will be some empties soon. They do make my less than stellar old products feel even less appealing though Sad

We are moving this summer. Before the move, I am trying to use up a bunch of almost empty stuff and cull stuff that never gets worn. After the move, I will reorganize everything in groups so that I can easily see every product in a certain category. I have so much unused stuff!
