Lipstick - is it worth splurging on?

I am trying to resist paying £17.50 for my favourite Clinique lipstick (creamy nude) but it seems the only one that is going to be suitable for me now. I used to like a No7 one but their lipsticks are all loud and bright now that they have revamped them, apart from the gloss ones which are fine and I do have a light pinky nude colour in one of their crayons but it doesn't stay on me long and my hair sticks to it when I have it loose.

Creamy nude by Clinique is THE perfect nude but the price goes through me. I have looked around other beauty counters in Boots which are reasonably priced and can't see anything to match it. Maybe I just need to persevere with the No7 crayon, people have given me compliments when I wear it.

Personally, if the lipstick suits you I would get it. It's better to buy one lipstick and use it up, rather than have a cheaper product which doesn't really work for you. I tend to save up and use my Boots points for this sort of purchase.

Taystee · 27/02/2015 07:22

I've wasted tonnes of money on lipsticks in the £5-10 bracket. You can't try them on properly and when I wear them for the first time I realise they don't suit. I figure I save money now by only having a few lipsticks but I get help choosing at one of the counters like bobbi brown or lancome. Saying that, I do have a lovely lipstick by MUA which cost a pound I think!

Stick with your clinique I say.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/02/2015 07:27

Same as Taystee, I've wasted so much money on cheap ones over the years. I had a Clinique favourite (discontinued now) which was the only one I ever used right down to the stub, worth it and paid for with Boots points. Having said that, my teo current favourites are cheap colours recommended by MNers!

Eliza22 · 27/02/2015 07:38

MUA do a nude called Bare. An excellent dupe for Creamy Nude. I have it.

Having said that, there are some shades I have which are expensive that I have bought repeatedly. I also had to bin a bobbi brown one which had been put on by the SA and I loved under the store lighting. Problem was, she'd used. Lip liner and gloss and when I used the lipstick alone, myself, it utterly drained my face and was all wrong.

HappenstanceMarmite · 27/02/2015 07:38

Same here but with a Chanel favourite. Always go back to it via several failed cheaper alternatives Angry

NimpyWWindowmash · 27/02/2015 07:42

I stick with my one and only clinique one too. ("Whole lot of honey", like my own lips but better. Stays on yet moisturises, holy grail in lipstick!)

If you have a perfect one, stick with it!

southeastastra · 27/02/2015 07:45

i stick with one, mac twig, i have about four of them, agree stick with the one you like otherwise it's just a waste

FrugalFashionista · 27/02/2015 08:28

The quality differences are not big between cheap and expensive brands but color ranges vary a lot. If you find a great shade, stick to it, nothing is more depressing than a bathroom cabinet full of almost-there budget buys that are never worn.

A good nude is really hard to find, I would definitely pay full price. I mean, how often do you need to replace a lipstick?

pussinboots61 · 27/02/2015 08:44

Thanks all, you've convinced me. Thing is I like Clinque foundation too and their eyeliner though I do get the eyeliner cheaper on Amazon. I might look at that honey lipstick too. Is that a nude?

I now only wear Lipstick Queen. They're pricy but the staying power is phenomenal.

I buy some cheaper cosmetics but never found a good cheap lipstick.

Pagwatch · 27/02/2015 09:10

Yeah, if you find a good one stick with it.
I had the remnants of a fav lipstick that was discontinued in my bag for months.

KissyBoo · 27/02/2015 09:16

I would argue that there are so bloody many nude lipsticks on the market with every possible tone/finish in terms of texture that I would buy cheap. Unless it is a really hard to come by colour -high street lipsticks are often better quality than high end ones in my experience.

I can't wear any nude lipsticks as I look morgue fresh and get frustrated as you can't move for nudes at the moment at the expense of more complex colours like garnets and brown rose ones. Rimmel Kate Moss range has peach toned nudes that match the Clinique one as does Revlon,L'oreal and Maybelline. MUA has one as well.

I have had several Clinique lipsticks and find them perfect if you want a cat's bum mouth in terns of their feathering power. Over priced and over rated.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/02/2015 09:25

I've never had feathering from lipstick at all, cheap or expensive. My problem is I tend to lick my lips so I end up losing it from the middles.

Eliza22 · 27/02/2015 15:32

morgue fresh! Grin

LoadsaBlusher · 27/02/2015 15:57

Also love MUA Bare Eliza22, I always have one in my handbag , one of my favourite lipsticks.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 27/02/2015 16:00

My favourite Nude lipstick is Naturist by Topshop, I quite like the Topshop ones. They do a nice pinky nude called Innocent too.

miaowmix · 27/02/2015 16:05

absolutely YES! I keep making the mistake of buying cheaper >£10 lipsticks (I am lipstick obsessed), and they just end up gathering dust. My favourites are by Chanel, Bobbi Brown, and Becca lipshine, which I thought were discontinued, but I've found them again on Strawberry.net. Hooray. Tatiana by Becca is my best ever red.

miaowmix · 27/02/2015 16:10

I think it's a colour/texture thing. Cheaper brands just don't ever get it quite right...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/02/2015 16:15

More expensive lipstick has a much nicer case too, for those times when you want to re-apply in public.

Not me, I don't wear it.

Morgue Fresh would be an improvement for me (I look Drag Queen Hooker) Sad

yazzy85 · 27/02/2015 17:38

I love Mac lipsticks, they are good quality and a huge range of shades and finishes. Currently 10% off in Debenhams ?

Elliptic5 · 27/02/2015 17:50

Has anyone tried the Charlotte Tilbury KISSING range? I would need to go to Harvey Nics to try it and at £23 I don't want to buy online in case the colour is wrong

Lemondrizzletwunt · 27/02/2015 18:26

Chanel is the best lipstick I have ever worn by a mile. And their service is so good, as well. I have a really difficult coloured cardigan that I wanted to match (without offending my skin tone and ending up looking like a lady of negotiable affection). The woman on the counter took one look at me, and with a quick swipe I had the perfect match. Stays on for hours, doesn't dry your lips out, looks fucking fabulous. What's not to like Grin

Watching with interest. I've never used lipstick as I worry about it going on my teeth/bleeding over my face/it never last very long/making me look like a drag queen. Sorry to take over OP, but what am I doing wrong?

lurkerspeaks · 27/02/2015 18:44

I keep economising on make up and then regretting it.

Currently got max factor mascara heavily recommended on here (it was 11 quid) it isn't nearly as good as the lancome it replaced….

I love Mac and chanel lipstick - latter do beige desire (not the best name) which is my perfect nude.
