I'm almost 50 & need something to wear for a formal dinner party.
Chic & stylish or mother of the bride?

Neither, but somehow just not quite right

haggardoldwitch · 26/02/2015 18:05

Frumpy do you think?

Spanish widow

FunkyPeacock · 26/02/2015 18:11

I like it but it's overpriced

For that amount of money I'd expect something more wow rather than just nice!

FunkyPeacock · 26/02/2015 18:14

The red one is nicer if you feel you can carry it off

The blue dress 'Mariana' looks more like work wear IMO

Madamecastafiore · 26/02/2015 18:14

Funereal.

ZeroFunDame · 26/02/2015 18:22

Hmmm - nothing wrong with it but, purely because someone else on these threads was looking for something similar recently, I know for a fact there are less predictable / more stylish frocks just waiting to be snapped up. (Particularly if you're not too proud to shop the tail end of the sales.)

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 26/02/2015 18:25

I like it, but I am mother of the bride age. However I got something similar in a phase 8 sale for £55, reduced from £185. Not sure I would pay nearly 300 quid for a dinner party.

ZeroFunDame · 26/02/2015 18:27

Don't know your size but this is cute.

ZeroFunDame · 26/02/2015 18:37

Please buy this ...

haggardoldwitch · 26/02/2015 18:39

Thanks for the comments, you lot are always right.
I've put on weight recently (thanks menopause) and am conscious of my spare tyre.
5'9" size 12-14, flat bum, wobbly arms, thick middle, decent legs.

It's a special dinner party amothers, a none surprise for me Wink

This might suit me, but it's very plain.

Love the DVF.

ZeroFunDame · 26/02/2015 18:55

Hah! OP I almost showed you that dress but worried that it's becoming too much of a visual cliché ...

cathyandclaire · 26/02/2015 18:58

I love that DVF, maybe with a silver cuff/some other fabulous silver jewellery. I have a couple of Anglomania dresses a bit like that and I always feel good in them. You can always wear really great shoes to draw attention to your legs too :)

Same dvf, in scarlet, sleeveless, for £120. US 10 which is a UK 12/14 in dvf.

haggardoldwitch · 26/02/2015 19:20

I feel rather excited, I'll order the DVF I think. Do you think the fabric will be thick enough to hide the lumps? I do have a control slip if needs be.

Thanks for the help.

Crossed posts with Fifty.

The red is a bargain, DH who's organising the none surprise loves a red dress, they offer free return so I've nothing to lose.

The red dress is fabulous, love it.
The blue one ok, but needs colour added somewhere, the one with the sticky out hip bits, no, unless you are 21 and a size non existant.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 26/02/2015 19:49

Not frumpy at all OP. It's gorgeous. Love the red one as well.
Black accessories if you go for the red one
And red accessories if you go for the black.

Love the red dress!

FiftyShadesOfSporn · 27/02/2015 14:36

Excellent!
