Going back to work: what briefcase?

Actually not even sure they're called briefcases now. I'm looking for a bag which I can take to work which is practical for files, smart and professional. And job interviews! My latest (now 13 years old) is a Hidedesign leather one which is quite ok but doesn't have anywhere for make up etc. I assume attaché cases are terribly 1986?

Any thoughts? I'm in post-16 and adult education. Or hope to be soon.

I work in London in an office-based job, and very few people use briefcases these days - men or women.

For women, the choice seems to be a large handbag/tote bag, or a black fabric backpack. I'd go with the handbag for a job interview!

Fiorelli do some beautiful and very stylish 'crossover' bags which are halfway between a handbag and a file bag/briefcase. I bought one in a powder blue a few years ago and the amount of times I got stopped by other women and asked where I got my bag! They're quite reasonable too, for good quality bags that last - usually between £60-£100, although watch out for sales, and if you have a TK Maxx near you they often have reduced ones, although obviously with less selection.

I would stck to a handbag until you see what the job entails. I suspect that the reason people have stopped using briefcases is because they rarely carry papers now, and those that are carried can get crumpled and spilled on as more can just be reprinted. I guess there are a few professions where original copies of paper documents are still used, but probably worth waiting until you've started to see what's needed.

Handbag is fine for interviews :)

I agree that no one uses briefcases now. Some women have giant handbags that will accommodate everything. Some people use back packs. Some people have laptop bags. People who need to carry lots of papers tend to use wheelie cases. I have a selection!

Great! I love the sound of the Fiorelli one.
