I am in town so hae all the major cosmetic players like Mac etc at my disposal. Can anyone recommend some shades o red that might suit me. I am not very experienced in the red lipstick department. Tia

When you say 'English Rose' do you mean pink undertones? That would suggest a cool based skintone which means you should usually try reds with a blue base as opposed to an orange base.

The only other thing I would say is that red can have a thinning effect on lips so texture will be important. Stay away from flat mattes and go for a satin or a gloss finish.

A friend with your sort of colouring favours Nars Jungle Red. I think MAC's Ruby Woo might be a blue/red too.

Yes I think so. Thanks for your suggestion

I have pink undertones, pale skin and need cool tones.

I find Ruby Woo too drying but LOVE LOVE LOVE MAC Russian Red.

SASASI · 20/02/2015 21:03

I find ruby woo really drying as well - might give Russian red a try!

cosmicglittergirl · 20/02/2015 21:14

Mac Lady Danger is good. I do love Ruby Woo though.

KissyBoo · 20/02/2015 21:44

I have an English rose/pink toned complexion and like no7 love red from their stay perfect range. It doesn't bleed and stays put without feeling heavy/waxy/chalky. It has a sheen to it rather than being flat matte so should be fine on thin lips.

I couldn't get on with Ruby Woo.

Kurololi · 20/02/2015 21:59

Another vote for Russian Red. It's my favourite

Lardylassnomore · 20/02/2015 21:59

Oh thanks for the tips. I was looking at one of the clinique chubby sticks and thought maybe the red one would be worth trying. Will pop in yo Mac tomorr ow and ask to try the ones you have suggested along with the no 7 one.

Lady Danger and Ruby Woo are my 2 favourite mac ones.
Lady Danger is more of an orangey day time red and the Ruby Woo is more vampy and Hollywood. Ruby woo is drying though, I tend to save for nights out

TBH I'd avoid red lippie if you have thin lips. My Dsis has thin lips and it really ages her, if that makes sense (I think because it makes them look even thinner).

rootypig · 21/02/2015 04:28

You need to think about the formulation as well as colour. As Wagon says, if you have thin lips, dense mattes like the MACs mentioned might not work well for you. And I find Mac formulations trying.

Try the YSL counter, their lipsticks are lovely, and have a look at the Vernis a Levres, which is brilliant. Goes on like a gloss, dries more like a lipstick, I've found they make my lips look fuller (and come in highly pigmented reds).

wigfieldrocks · 21/02/2015 09:09

Reckon do a version of chubby stick for half the price which are just as good - I have a lovely red one which is a little glossy and lasts for ages but not too heavy.

wigfieldrocks · 21/02/2015 09:09

Revlon that is meant to say!

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/02/2015 09:12

Try a chubby stick or similar first, I agree.

I adore my Revlon red one, but I have different colouring, so it might not suit you.

Try Liptick Queen Medieval, it's sheer, slightly glossy but you can add extra layers to make the colour more intense.

Don't go too dark or too matte if you have thin lips. Unless of course you fall in love with a dark matte red, in which case wear it and be happy.

Lardylassnomore · 21/02/2015 16:27

I have ended up with a Clinique chubby stick in chunky cherry. When the SA tried it on I loved it so much I used my advantage card points (well some of them) to purchase it. Thanks for all your suggestions and help.

Another vote for Lipstick Queen Medieval here. I tried it as I read a review which described it as 'the red that everyone can wear'. It is sheer but lovely to wear and feels as if its moisturising my lips too.
