using deodorant with evening dress

need to wear dry clean navy dress, last time I got a deodorant mark on it putting in on over my head.

do you think I should put the dress on first then put on the deodorant putting tissues against armholes to protect dress?

my other deodrant is a stick but I bought an anti black mark spray
