Can I wear a shoulder bag to a wedding?

I'm going to a formal wedding later this month. I have the frock (fitted knee-length shift; abstract print in shades of grey, brown and blue), the hat (angled silk saucer in colours to match the frock); will wear a navy coat for the church. Still to get shoes (am thinking plain pointed courts in soft grey suede) and bag.
The bag is the problem. My instinct is that it needs to be a clutch or hand-held for a formal occasion and to preserve the lines of the outfit, but there are a lot more shoulder bags around.
Am I creating unnecessary problems for myself? Please advise!
