AVEDA HAIR CARE

Is it the proverbial dog's bollocks- or is it overrated and overpriced?

I've had my hair done a couple of times with the products at the hairdressers but then hair always looks good when they have blow dried it.

Is it worth spending £50-ish on shampoo, conditioner and styling lotion?

Aveda shampoo made my hair dry and crispy, and it smelt of pee. It was so bad I poured it down the toilet, if I get a shampoo that doesn't suit me I use it as shower gel. This was minging.

flux500 · 13/02/2015 17:40

I have used aveda stuff and really liked it. But it is expensive. .. sometimes on pay day I think I'll get some more but there always seems something better to spend the money on! If you register with them I think you get a free sample so maybe do that and see what the free sample is like?

Nells77 · 13/02/2015 19:11

I didn't like it, I tried 2 different ones and they both made my hair dry and unmanageable. I use kerestase now which I love. Smile

MilkThistle187 · 13/02/2015 19:33

I use the Black Malva shampoo and love it. Admittedly my hair did not look good for the first couple of weeks, but I read that this is common when you switch from shampoo with silicones. The bottle was enormous and pretty £££, but I have had it for well over a year now. My hair is very glossy if I do say so myself, so I would recommend it.

fiorentina · 13/02/2015 20:13

I use shampure and really like it. I think it smells nice and makes my hair soft but controllable. It's very expensive though, I do use other shampoos at other times.

littlebearsmummy · 13/02/2015 20:49

The scalp shampoo (can't remember exact name) is the only thing I've found to help one of my daughters with major dry scalp. Clears it up in no time and leaves her hair super glossy. I can only use it with the conditioner as it becomes a nightmare to brush otherwise.

MarshaBrady · 13/02/2015 20:49

Love the Pure Abundance shampoo and conditioner. I don't always use it, but it's great when I do.

LordEmsworth · 13/02/2015 22:49

I only use Aveda. I have coloured hair so I mix up the colour care system & the Madder Root (for red hair) range. I have great hair Grin. It doesn't smell as nice as Shampure, but it keeps my hair red and soft and glossy...

EachandEveryone · 13/02/2015 22:55

I use the Rosemary and Mint because the hairdresser talked me into it. I hate it. Makes my scalp and skin really dry. I tried the hair loss stuff as well which is mega expensive. The same thing happened. I went back to the shop. They weren't interested. So, bad customer care as well.

Fabulassie · 14/02/2015 08:42

I'm currently trying the Naturally Straight stuff. It does make my hair straighten much faster, but I have yet to let it air dry and see if it's now naturally straighter.

TarkaTheOtter · 14/02/2015 08:45

I use shampure. I've had the big bottles for over a year now. I bought then in the US where they are significantly cheaper. They are the only shampoo/conditioner I have found to help my itchy scalp which also makes my hair look good.

ZaraW · 14/02/2015 13:44

I used to use them but when the founder of Aveda stated that they are not as natural/green as they claim since he sold out to Estee Lauder I did a bit of research and I began to look elsewhere.

pinkfrocks · 14/02/2015 14:11

I'm not really bothered about the 'natural' label- I'm not buying into a lifestyle. I just want a decent shampoo. So many of the Elvive ones seem to cause build-up and also make my scalp a bit itchy eventually. I've tried Organix and they make my hair flyaway and it just doesn't look good- limp.
I also tried Richard Ward's new range which was okay but nothing great.
Before that it was Charles Worthington. I think shampoos are a minefield now- so many to choose from! I don't even have 'problem' hair - it's normal, straight and plenty of it but some shampoos seem to make it limp or flyaway.

I have been using Liz Earle Botanical Shine Shampoo for the past 9 months. I love it. You only need the tiniest amount, smells lovely and makes my hair shine. The first time I used it I wasnt sure but I persevered and cant imagine not using it. And the spots I was getting on my back have gone. Not used Aveda for years but when I did it was Shampure.

elfandsafeT · 14/02/2015 16:04

I use Brilliant (I have thick straight coloured hair) - have done for about 20 years - always get comments about how nice it looks.

As an added bonus I'm only 500 points short of a free spa weekend in the Caribbean (that's a lot of shampoo though!)

Muckymoo71 · 14/02/2015 16:16

Black malva is great, dosent smell the best but since using it every other wash my hair is softer, less frizzy, colour more even. Lasts ages too. Less scalp build up too.

Behooven · 14/02/2015 19:39

For excellent no build up, non itchy shampoo (and everything else including the best hairbrushes I've ever had) have a look at Philip Kingsley. Magic stuff.

TarkaTheOtter · 14/02/2015 19:42

Try to get some samples of shampure. I noticed a difference in scalp itchiness and my hair straight away - it is prone to being frizzy and unmanageable. Then you'll know if it suits you without the outlay.

Bakeoffcakes · 14/02/2015 19:53

I use the colour conserve shampoo and conditioner and love it. It really does make a difference to the condition of my hair and people make comments about how shiny my hair is.

pinkfrocks · 14/02/2015 20:05

I have the Philip Kingsley for itchy scalp- it's for DH not me- and it's fine but does seem to 'overwash' my hair- it goes flyaway. I don't have itchy scalp- but after months of using Elvive I sometimes get a build up unless I rinse and rinse like mad every hair wash.
