What to wear in the evenings - Rome in March

So day-wear will be comfy shoes and lots of layers (apparently the weather can be anywhere between 5 degrees and 15 degrees in March) - but evenings?

There are four of us going - me, DH and another couple. I really don't want to be tottering around Rome in BodyCon dresses and 5 inch heels (!) but any suggestions for looking elegantly casual in the evening, when going to bars and restaurants?

Just to say, do avoid heels at all costs - there are lots of hard, uneven cobble stones in Rome which don't work well at all with heels, so definitely stick to flats - quite sturdy ones for serious tourism and perhaps one pair of prettier flats or smartish boots in evenings - but still with a not too flimsy sole, unless you're planning to go everywhere by taxi.

Smart trousers (eg cigarette pants) or good jeans with stylish top should cut it for most evening outings - plus perhaps a dress. I would keep that elegantly understated too.

I'd suggest a couple of casual-ish blazers/jackets, some printed scarves and slim trousers or skinny jeans with ankle boots. Not been to Rome in years though so I can't speak for what the natives will be wearing! But in my experience of living in Italy, probably black puffer jacket, heeled boots and mirrored sunglasses...
