I never, ever bought any clothes in Laura Ashley - until this weekend.
Spotted a great jacket in the window www.lauraashley.com/uk/coats+jackets/collarless-biker-jacket/invt/ct733
Looks much nicer IRL. 20% off, bargain!

Made we wonder whether there are other shops I should take a second look at...

Cos is another one for me. I really want to like it though. I see some great bits from Cos in magazines, but whenever I go in, it all looks plain and drab. Probably just me though!

I never realised SimplyBe was a physical shop - thought it was online only!

Flingingmelon · 02/02/2015 14:42

Debenhams, horrible shopping experience
Oasis - yawn
New look/select/primark and any other cheap crap
Laura Ashley/m&s/next/Hobbs/DP - I like to think I'm still cool ??
American Apparel - total rip off
River Island - over designed
All Saints - like 2010 never happened

mammuzzamia · 02/02/2015 14:49

"All Saints - like 2010 never happened"

Grin Oh yes! Though I'd minus a decade or two, personally.

Do they still demand (yes demand your address; "Address?") and other details, at White Company on paying? I was always Hmm when they did that and politely refused.

Nextwednesday · 02/02/2015 14:53

Don't go in:
Gap - literally never bought anything in there
Young shops eg Top Shop, River Island
Zara - never found a thing in there
Coast - too weddingy, nothing fits me
BHS - sooo frumpy
Oasis & Warehouse - liked it about 20 years ago, seems like tat now
Debenhams - stressful

HarveySpecter · 02/02/2015 14:54

Wallis, River Island, Oasis, Fat Face, Laura Ashley, White Stuff........

BallroomWithNoBalls · 02/02/2015 16:18

I buy loads from Laura Ashley! People are always surprised when I say something I'm wearing is from there. Lovely work dresses, fab floaty blouses, gorgeous colours. And I'm addicted to their home stuff so browse there quite a lot and end up looking at clothes too.

pinkfrocks · 02/02/2015 16:22

New Look
River Island
M&S
Fat Face
H&M
Dotty ps
Next
Debenhams
House of Fraser
Oasis
Monsoon
Wallis
Miss Selfridge

could go on but easier to say where I DO go

PrincessOfChina · 02/02/2015 16:25

I buy tons from Oasis.

I never go in:

Zara - sizing iffy and clothes poor quality
Mango - I forget
Miss Selfridge - just no
Topshop - except for basics and the only decent maternity range on the High St
M&S - no
River Island - although another who loved carrying my PE Kit in a bag as a teen
Next - Homeware and kids is great. Mens, not bad. Women's is frumpy.

AmberNectarine · 02/02/2015 16:33

Never have any luck in Cos.
Don't bother with Hobbs, too geography teacher for me.
Never buy anything from Jigsaw - instant frump on me
Hardly ever have joy in Whistles either.

On the high st I mostly buy from:
Topshop
American Apparel
Jack Wills

QueenCardigan · 02/02/2015 16:48

I don't tend to go in Hobbs/reiss/whistles/jigsaw/phase eight as they don't have the casual sahm stuff I need. Although I do have a quick browse if I'm in John Lewis.

River island have great cotton long line vests and there is often a hidden gem of a top in there. Their jeans are meant to be good too but I've never tried them on.

polyhymnia · 02/02/2015 16:57

I didn't know there were actual Simply Be shops either till I recently spotted one at the tacky end of Oxford St. Can't stand them online but, having put a foot over the threshold, was still aghast at the array of garish cheap-looking polyester tat that confronted me. Never again!

BlueEyedWonder · 02/02/2015 16:59

I never go in Laura Ashley either. I think it over priced, chintzy and frumpy. I might be nearly 40 but I don't want to look it!
Other shops I never go in:
Primark -too messy
River Island - too trendy
Zara - just never think of it

twobambinos · 02/02/2015 17:57

Never go in benneton or paco, most parts of Debenhams

I like oasis but rarely buy unless its reduced.same with warehouse.

I hate h and m with a passion. but I still go in for a look. Sometimes the dds get bits.

And i don't like tk Maxx either the nice stuff would literally want to jump off the shelf at me.

River island got fab boots and jeans there 7 years ago they were expensive but still going strong but the quality of the stuff now is very poor it's more like Primark quality but with a hefty price tag.

Wellieswithaholein · 02/02/2015 19:02

I never go in the following
Primark
M&S
Fat Face
M&Co
Tesco/asda etc
Gap
River Island-used to, but not now as I think its overpriced and not as good.
Monsoon
Zara
and loads more

BallroomWithNoBalls · 02/02/2015 19:19

Oops I didn't answer the question - I give most shops a chance but I never go into -

All saints - far too expensive
M and Co - sooo frumpy
Whistles - again too expensive and not my style
Fat face and white stuff - too scruffy
Ted Baker - used to like it but find it too try hard now

Places I often buy from that aren't supermarkets are Uniqlo, River Island, M and S, Zara, Cos. I am currently annoyed with Gap as I bought a jumper from there which bobbled so badly it's unwearable, given its full price was £40 (I got it 50% off) is unacceptable.

squizita · 02/02/2015 19:42

I find uniqlo has usurped gap. They do the same stuff cheaper and better.

morethanpotatoprints · 02/02/2015 19:58

Monsoon
Next
Those fashion shops that are pitch black inside.
Most designer label shops
Sports Direct
Body shop

Loads more if I really think.

Silverjohnleggedit · 02/02/2015 20:01

Never been in
Hollister
Jack Wills

Made the mistake of buying a coat in All Saints last year after a boozy lunch and returned it because I wised up when I got home, I now have a rather large credit note and I hate every fucking thing in that shop, every season I hope they have something wearable without the daft slashes and asymmetric hems - I'm so bored with their clothes!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 02/02/2015 20:02

OP Cos is one of those shops that works if you buy your whole entire wardrobe from there, but is completely useless if you want to buy a top that will go with anything else from any other retailer.

I do lurk online there though, lusting after ugly shoes and pendulum dresses which would fit my entirely imaginary globe trotting career as an architect...

TeaAddict235 · 02/02/2015 21:50

sports direct (yucksville apart from trainers),
River Island (i'm not trendy enough methinks),
Matalan (I think that store is a false economy, polyester and acrylic),
Primark (makes me stressed by the sheer volume of stock),
new look (style is a bit tooo young & trendy for me),

Armpitt · 03/02/2015 06:13

Sports direct has lots of er... Sportswear for those who gym

ReluctantCamper · 03/02/2015 08:44

Yy matalan. Never understand what the shop is about.

NomDePlumeRidesAgain · 03/02/2015 08:47

I like Oasis jeans.

NomDePlumeRidesAgain · 03/02/2015 08:48

YY to bloody all saints. Overpriced goth chic
