My skin is shit after spending my whole life thinking I have dry skin I think I actually got it wrong and I in fact have dehydrated skin!

It's dull, grey, sullen sucks up any creams and make up I out on etc!

So I'm looking for a simple skin care rountine what products are good and worth looking at?

Also been reading good things about rosehip oil for dehydrated skin , anyone used this?

You need Cicaplast (not the Cicaplast Baume in the big tubes) from La Roche Posay. It's not expensive, about £11 for a decent size tube but is the best for flaky, tight skin. It's fab as a primer under make-up too.

Have you tried looking at Caroline Hirons blog? I've been suffering with dehydrated skin and the combo of acid toning (sounds scary but honestly its not - first aid beauty pads from feel unique are good budget pads) and a Vichy serum which was recommended by Sali Hughes on the Guardian site has really worked wonders.

Nabootique · 28/01/2015 08:58

Agree with Zoo. My skin was like yours, except combination. Never twigged before CH's blog that the reason my foundation went patchy was because all the moisture was being sucked out by my dehydrated skin! I do use rosehip oil and I love it. Put it on last thing at night and if I need it during the day I put it under moisturiser because make up sits better on top of that, rather than on top of oil. Hydraluron is good for dehydration as well. Put on before moisturiser and it gets the most water out of the moisturiser and into the skin. If you use it at night put those on, then the oil. Hydraluron is a bit ££ but hyaluronic acid is available in other serums. I think Aldi do a good one for cheap that I'll be trying next.

Homepride1 · 28/01/2015 09:12

I have looked at Caroline Hirons but to be honest I find the whole skincare products a minefield I really don't know where to start. I'm 35 and still haven't found the right product for my skin so Im nervous about overloading it with the wrong products.

While my skin is dry I don't tend to get really dry patches and I prone to getting blackheads and whiteheads on chin

I will try and read up on acid toners and see what they recommend but yes that would of been the last thing I would think about using

You can start simple and build it up if you need to. Not everyone needs all of the products/stages in the routine that she recommends, I don't think. What do you do currently?

Homepride1 · 28/01/2015 09:48

I'm just a switcher between products baca use I have never found the perfect routine, sometimes use coconut oil to cleanse sometimes avene, simple tried bodyshop, clairn etc etc. I like to cleanse and rinse off ideally as skin just doesn't feel clean otherwise and over the years have used a mixture of creams, currently just on blue pot Nivea but I know these products just aren't right and I need to shop for the right products but just find a trip to boots or a counter a nightmare as I actually just don't know where to start, do I need to tone Confused

I can't afford mega bucks but will happily go midrange if I can find the right product but just actually don't know where to start and if I should buy everything from the same brand or not!

Have just read up on Caroline hiron but just confused myself even more and couldn't actually find any product recommendations

Any suggestions for dehydrated eye areas?

Homepride1 · 28/01/2015 09:54

Oh and admit recently I haven't been taking good care of my skin just wash in shower and throw on some Nivea, I also suffer from blocked pores or maybe blackheads (very small) on nose, cheeks and chin so need a good cleanser to tackle these problems

You definitely don't need to buy everything from the same brand, which is good because you might like something with Vitamin C in if you are a bit dull (my skin looks like I'm dead without it!), and then another product to deal with dehydration. What did you try in the Body Shop? I'm loving it in there at the moment because it's much cheaper than so many other places, and they have different ranges for different things. Their website has a skin analysis quiz thingy that's quite helpful. They don't do an acid toner but you could always get that somewhere else if you wanted to try it. I reckon start with a decent cleanser (do you wear much make up? Double cleansing might be better), acid toner (the pads Zoo recommended are really good, or Nip&Fab Glycolic pads), hydrating toner and moisturiser. Can always add oil/serum later if required.

Nabootique · 28/01/2015 10:03

Not sure about dehydrated eye area. My eye creams are very basic. It's the one thing I don't bother much about until I start really crinkling Grin

Leviticus · 28/01/2015 10:04

Regarding the cleansing it may be technique rather than product that you need.

A large blob of creamy cleanser massaged well into a dry face and removed with a warm flannel (I do it twice) will remove all your make up and leave your skin clean and exfoliated.

If you wear waterproof mascara you might want something to take that off but otherwise that should suffice.

I love Clarins Blue Orchid facial oil as a night cream for dehydrated skin. £32 but you use 5 drops at a time so it lasts a good few months and it smells amazing.

Nabootique · 28/01/2015 11:38

Trilogy do an online guide as well and their stuff is really nice, including the rosehip oil. Good for fine lines, actually bobs123, if that was your dehydrated eye concern.

avagosling · 28/01/2015 11:59

Rosehip oil is amazing for dehydrated skin, I can't live without it, I get mine from Fushi www.fushi.co.uk/rosehip-seed-oil-organic.html

avagosling · 28/01/2015 12:00

Also, Moringa and Tamanu oils are great to put the moisture back into the skin. Drink lots of water. And take omega oils

PeterManion · 28/01/2015 12:22

I, too, have recently come to the realisation my skin is dehydrated, as opposed to dry. I am slowly adding to my arsenal of products to combat dry patches and redness.

After doing a bit of research and getting word-of-mouth recommendations, I am enjoying Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish hot cloth cleanser.I am also using REN Clarimatte Clarifying Toner, which is helping me break the habit of scrubbing hell out of my face with whatever exfoliator I can get my hands on (that said, a very occasional use of Nip+Fab Glycolic Scrub is helping).

Eucerin 5% Urea cream has been a revelation - I am so, so pleased with the results. It is also significantly cheaper than the Pai moisturiser I was using before and can be bought with Boots points! The best eye cream I have found is Origins Ginzing - I can't say my dark circles have gone, but the eye area has a noticeably improved texture and my fine lines have shrunk a bit.

I think my next purchase is going to be a facial oil, or perhaps a serum containing hyarulonic acid - not sure yet. Am liking the sound of Rosehip oil...

I have very sensitive and quite dry skin and for me nothing else hits the sweet spot between really effective and way too expensive like Kiehls. I use a cleansing wipe in the evening and then their Midnight Recovery Elixir, with a bit of Creme D'Elegance Reparateur over the top if I'm feeling extra crispy. Then in the morning I use Ultra Facial Cream and if my skin is flaring up (I get dry patches when it's very cold) I use Skin Rescuer underneath.

Shonajay · 28/01/2015 18:37

I'm confused with dehydrated/dry skin. I drink tons of water, and use a clarisonic facebrush every two days to remove flaky bits. Sometimes my (water based MAC face and body) foundation seems to sink in straight away, and my Estée lauder double wear definitely highlights flaky bits. My skin is sensitive, so I moisturise about three times a day with pure coconut oil. Any advice?

AlfAlf · 28/01/2015 18:43

I love dermalogica skin smoothing cream. my skin is dehydrated and sensitive, I've tried other moisturisers but nothing works as well for me. I use a few drops of face oil on top, used to use rose hip oil but got a gift of some amazing oil from L'Occitane so am using that currently. I don't want to know how much it was.

Twinklestein · 28/01/2015 18:52

If you have dry skin the best thing is not to use water on your face - you can feel it go dry and tight afterwards.

I use the oil cleansing method, Logona organic wild rose cleanser and Logona wild rose night cream. Instead of water I use Roberts Rose Water which is actually Italian despite the name, it leaves your face feeling clean and soft. I also use Dr Hauschka rose day and night creams - excellent for dry skin.

I also use rosehip oil. When my skin is really dehydrated I use extra virgin olive oil at night.

Twinklestein · 28/01/2015 18:53

The other thing for dry skin is to avoid products with alcohol.

Zanzibaragain · 28/01/2015 19:37

Cetaphil cleanser
Aveda acid toner
Serum, Vichy aqualia thermal/Avene hydrating thingy
Avene hydrance moisturiser, riche in winter/ light in summer with 25%spf

It's taken me years and a face full of roseacea, spots , hyper pigmentation, lines and flaky skin to work out my skin was dehydrated.

OhMittens · 28/01/2015 19:45

Rosehip is great. I have Akins from Holland and Barrett, there's another brand, much famous, but it seemed too heavy for my skin. Akin is perfect.

pinkfrocks · 28/01/2015 20:18

You still need to feed your skin from the inside. As important- if not more so- than using creams etc.

Avocado 3 x a week
Olive oil or rapeseed oil - 1tbs daily on salads
Eggs
Almonds, walnuts and brazils
oily fish 3 x a week
