I'm still a total novice at makeup and skincare so I'll be heading out to boots to hunt down the products mentioned in the thread. I tend to suffer for dry skin too, and it doesn't help that my skin tone is uneven - buying foundation is a nightmare. Again as the others have said, avoid alcohol based products, tend to be dehydrating and depending on how sensitive your skin is avoid sulfates and parabens. They are usually found in the bb creams or the primers because they act as preservatives but I've found them to dry my skin out more unfortuately.

One product I can recommend is the Body Shop vitamin E face mist especially if you have dry, dehydrated and suffer from flaky skin. I tend to use after I've washed my face and my moisturizer so it soaks in. Then apply your makeup and put spray some more after. It acts as a base for the makeup and locks in the face cream you've already applied. The mist also acts a finishing spray to keep your make up non cakey and less likely to cling to dry areas. Even though I don't wear much makeup, it gives a less dull appearance to the skin and it's not too expensive. I've bought it so much, that I've ended up buying the ingredients online and making my own face mist. Just Vitamin E oil, rose water and a few drops of glycerin into a spray bottle, and use it throughout the day.

Gosh I didn't mean to write an essay... Sorry..
Forgot to mention, maybe checking out youtube beauty vloggers, they usually do product reviews/demos so you can see for yourself before you head to the stores.

Oh, and don't forget the SPF if you are bothered about signs of ageing too, as quite a few of these more natural or moisturising creams don't contain them. Even really expensive ones don't necessarily contain an SPF. I layer up for this reason with the rosehip underneath a good SPF moisturiser.

Here's what worked on my parched skin

Drink more water. Boring but works. You'll be weeing like crazy at first but your body adjusts within a few days.

Avoid foaming cleansers, stick to balms/oils/cream hot cloth cleansers

Use a hyaluronic acid based serum to retain moisture during the day.

Avoid matte foundations/powders as a lot alcohol/talc based. Swap to tinted moisturiser or BB cream.

Gentle acid based exfoliant at night. Pixi Glow tonic is lovely and has no alcohol.

Facial oil at night. loving Pai rosehip oil. Very concentrated, 1-2 drops enough for entire face.

For a body lotion Boots Botanics seaweed lotion for very dry skin is good - after trying all the usual suspects such as E45 and Aveeno, this Boots own brand has worked for me.

MrPickles123 · 28/01/2015 21:02

Definitely agree with these oils- I started using argan oil. I cleanse with La roche Posay cleansing milk (for dry skin) and then whilst my face is damp, massage in the oil. The rest of my skin looks great , I still have problems with hormonal acne on my chin though. I do this morning and night. Since cleansing and using the oil in mornings, my make up glides on and stays on so much longer. I do also have to exfoliate regularly to and use a muslin cloth.

BallroomWithNoBalls · 28/01/2015 21:43

Lots of good advice here BUT skin needs both oil and water. Moisturising creams are at their most basic, an emulsion of the two. So while it's great to use pure oil to moisturise, you do still need to deliver water to your skin too - whether that's as a moisturiser or a serum.

I have similar skin and regular acid toning (liquid gold), with a routine of cleansing with a cleansing oil (a proper one that emulsifies with water, you'd like it as you can splash or wet flannel it off with water and it leaves you feeling lovely and clean - try Shu Uemura cleansing oils are the best or Body shop camomile one is cheap) and good), followed by daytime - and Avene Hydrance Optimale Riche moisturiser, or Nivea blue pot if my skin is feeling in need of extra tlc. Night I use a facial oil then Nivea blue pot on top.

I use CeraVe cleanser and also Simple foaming facial cleanser (alternating morning and night). I use AmLactin moisturiser. I'm pretty sure it has a lot of lactic acid in it. It stings when first applied but makes a huge difference. I use Aldi night cream and day cream around my eyes. And I drink a lot of water.

Somersetlady · 29/01/2015 07:55

Use the rosehip oil every night before bed after seeing it on Mumsnet as a former La Prarie devotee (still use the eye cream) i was amazed at how good it was and how little it costs. I now use it on my very dry hair before i wash it and my section scar.

Definitely worth a try at the price!

How do you know whether your skin is dry or dehydrated?

When I put some moisturisers on I get blocked pores , little white spots? Does that mean it's oily.

Would love to have a consultation from a beauty expert.

AlfAlf · 29/01/2015 09:27

ggirl one way in which beauticians diagnose dehydration is if your skin drags when you run a finger across, also if you pinch the skin and it doesn't go back immediately.
When my skin is really badly dehydrated, it's been greasy underneath and flaky on top.

pinkfrocks that's good advice about food. Someone on here once recommended almond milk, I used it for about 6 months and it was great for my skin. Must start up again..
There's some kind of short term (like a week or so) skin diet involving lots of salmon, that makes you glow with good skin health.

I checked and my L'Occitane facial oil is called Divine.
I have been told to use moisturiser then oil, the oil then helps keep moisture in, and the moisturiser won't permeate through the oil if you use oil first.

Coconut oil is lovely but not for everyone, my dd1 has very dry skin and reacted badly to it. Also it's not a substitute for moisturiser.

greenlizard · 29/01/2015 09:51

Another vote for catephil cleanser washed off with a hot cloth.
BiFacil waterproof eye make up remover by Lancôme (gentle but amazing stuff)
Tone with Simple alcohol free toner
Day moisturiser E45 lotion (non- perfumed)massaged in.
Evening moisturiser - some sort of facial oil - I keep moving about which one I use (lighter than creams in my view and don't seem to overload the skin.
Exfoliation when needed(about x2 a week for me in the evening) - neutropenia daily facial scrub as is quite gentle and the hot cloth/flannel does a good daily job)

Drink loads of water, include oil in your diet - omegas, olicpve oil and avacadoes and always take your make up off before you go to bed.

Shonajay · 29/01/2015 12:06

I don't use alcohol based anything, I do use cetaphil sometimes or eve lom. Would vitamin e oil capsules work? Think I've got some of them. Oh, and the water- I swim every morning so carry an Avex refillable bottle which holds 750mls. I must drink at least five of those a day, even at work.

I'm wondering if chlorine could be an issue, and if I could use a barrier cream or something? I'm also on OxyContin and liquid morphine for back pain from cancer treatment, that might not be helping but can't do without.

squoosh · 29/01/2015 12:20

Superdrug do a serum for dehydrated skins that gets rave reviews. A friend of mine was beside herself when it disappeared from the shelves a few months ago but it seems to be back in stock now.

It's called Simply Pure Hydrating Serum and it only costs £2.69. Worth a try.

squoosh · 29/01/2015 12:27

If you feel a bit bamboozled by all the products just look at the ingredients list and look for things containing hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid clings on to moisture and will plump your skin up.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 29/01/2015 12:27

Neal's Yard Frankincense nourishing (not hydrating) cream is the bollocks.

I have tried Rosehip (and get all my oils from Naissance on Amazon- cheap as chips) but prefer Argan. The rosehip just didn't seem enough somehow. However, I am currently using NY Frankincense oil as well and am loving it.

I do a GA 30% shizzle every so often, I buy that (also cheap as chips) from ebay.

And as someone else said, blue Nivea, or Astral is great to slap on and leave overnight.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 29/01/2015 12:28

Oh, I had a hyaluronic serum from ebay as well.

NimpyWWindowmash · 29/01/2015 12:34

agree, body shop vit E stuff is good.

super drug vit E stuff ok too

Pjran · 29/01/2015 12:50

I now use Demol500 daily. It's not expensive, can be used as a soap substitute to cleanse and moisturiser. Best bit is it's also medicated so will help clear those nasty little spots.

Twinklestein · 29/01/2015 14:19

NY Frankincense Nourishing is great, I second that. I personally dislike Nivea blue and Astral - very greasy.

PeskyRat · 29/01/2015 15:14

I think my skin has been both dehydrated and dry, never been totally sure how to tell which is which....but I've often had tight feeling skin after certain products, moisturiser not sinking in, then it could feel greasy to touch but my foundation would look dry and flaky (have also been prone to spots/acne, even with the dryness) etc.

Used and loved Liz Earle cleanse and polish/toner/moisturiser for years, but then I don't know if the formulas changed, or if my skin changed, it just didn't seem to suit me anymore.

Have also used rosehip oil, trilogy and a generic one, in the past and found it nice and soothing if I used it sparingly as and when needed.

My current routine though, is definitely working for my skin. It doesn't feels dry/dehydrated or tight at all, spots under control, make up goes on nicely etc:

Cleanse with Bravura Azulen cream cleanser, often using Cetaphil after aswell.

Eye make up off with L'oreal Micellar water.

Splash face with water then use Bravura Hyaluronic serum while skin still wet .

Then moisturise with Bravura Azulen moisturiser.

Also have the Bravura Clay mask/cleanser which I use once/twice a week and have the Collagen cream which is a bit rich for me but gets used occasionally.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 29/01/2015 16:50

My skin is the best it has been in years and all I've done is go back to basics. Dove cream bar in the shower in the morning, gentle going over with a towel to exfoliate, then slap on loads of Astral cream. I let it soak in for 10 mins before applying make up. I think all the messing about I was doing over the years just made things worse. I also don't bother taking my foundation off at night (slattern).

squoosh · 29/01/2015 16:55

For me taking my makeup off at the end of the day and massaging in my various potions and lotions is something I look forward to. It's relaxing, wind-down time for me. Going to bed with my makeup on or having a quick rub of a face wipe just wouldn't be something that would appeal.

Wafflesandhoney · 29/01/2015 17:07

I have dry/dehydrated skin - I think you need clarifying oil and a good cream - I like Dr Hauschka

drink water. I have also started an omega 3 supplement

Vintagebeads · 29/01/2015 19:04

Cicaplast, La Roche Posay, its not expensive, but is gentle, hydrating and really good if you are blotchy or sensitive, , bloody great stuff.
