How do you know what colours work together?

I'm in a bit confused about which colours work with each other. I know the basics and know how black and white works with other colours but I don't understand others.
For example I know black would work with khaki but what other colours work with khaki? What colours work with camel?
I saw the lady on "does my bum look 40" wear khaki and camel together which really confused me.
Any help would be appreciated.

AFAIK, yellow is the key.
Yellowy colours are either spring (clear) or autumn (muted).
Non-yellow are winter (clear) or summer (muted).

So spring/autumns can do yellow, orange, peach, mustard, gold, etc. Winter/summers need to steer clear of colours like this and be careful of which shades of green or brown they use.

Camel / beige is also tricky because it can have brown / yellow / sandy / grey / pinkish overtones. Chose carefully!

It depends a bit on what you mean by khaki, it can be beige like chinos or quite green. I have chinos that I mix with lots of colours as I consider them quite neutral but it would depend on the exact shade.

I just wondered if there was a trick to figuring out colours that go with out her colours really.

Colour theory if you ignore the pineapples and oranges, this might be helpful.

Instyle magazine does a colour crash course feature which is pretty good. I found this on pinterest. Apparently they do a colour crash course app too.

Good info on this page on colour combinations - you can pick colours that clash or colours that go together depending on what look you are after:

I don't know if I'll get slated for this, but I love Trinny and Susannah's book What You Wear Can Change Your Life. Really nice chapter on working out which colours suit you and which colours go with which.

Thanks for the great advice. I think I need to sort out my wardrobe and play around with the colours. The colour wheel and Pinterest is great.
