how to avoid 'Mum boots'?

Hoping to buy some brown leather ankle boots to wear with jeans.

Very wary of so-called 'Mum boots'. What are they and how do I avoid? Post pics please to help me.

I'd like to know the answer to this too. I'm currently wearing these...I'll take it on the chin if someone wants to tell me they're hideous Smile

JugglingLife · 24/01/2015 15:04

Do you think it's all about the heel? Thinking of those fecking awful pixie boots from the 80's, lordy me some of those were just nasty.

MarshaBrady · 24/01/2015 15:05

How high / flat would you like them to be?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2015 15:21

I've got those as well, Theresa. I suspect that they ARE rather mummish, but they are comfortable and I like them. And my 19 year old, super stylish dd copied me and bought them too!

I like these too.

And these with a heel

LOVE these but they are black not brown

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2015 15:25

Gunslinger boots. I like!

AgentCooper · 24/01/2015 15:26

I've got these and they've attracted lots of compliments. V comfy too: Clarks black flats

santamarianovella · 24/01/2015 15:26

But the mom boots and mom jeans are so hot right now!

remus the first two are nice,

MarshaBrady · 24/01/2015 15:28

I never knew that shoes shot on a carpet like this could be so popular. pettys get repinned every couple of days.

Half price here

I have some and they are very easy to wear with skinnies.

TheresaMayNot · 24/01/2015 15:39

I love those Agent!

whatiswrongwithyou · 24/01/2015 15:45

Remus, those first one's are terrible, definite Mum boots! Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2015 15:50

I think they are awful in black, but quite nice in brown.

And anyway, the 'mum boots' thing is so silly - we're mums, on a site called MUMSnet. I have comfortable boots and I have 'can't walk v far in them boots' and 'work boots' and 'muddy walk boots' etc, etc. They all have their place. Sometimes something sensible and comfortable is what's needed - and sometimes it isn't.

Twinklestein · 24/01/2015 15:54

Avoid Clarks, Next, M&S, Duo...

I would say Remus' selection are classic mum boots (sorry Remus) Grin

Twinklestein · 24/01/2015 15:58

I agree that the mum boot label is absurd.

We are all mums thus our boots are mumboots.

However, personally I would define them as boots that are a frumpy or conservative take on a particular style.

For example, you can buy nice biker boots or you can buy mumsy biker boots.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2015 16:00

Well I am proud to be a mum boot wearer then. I still think it's ridiculous. And surely it's about how you wear things, too?

Merguez · 24/01/2015 16:02

I want a bit of a heel.

I like the Hobbs ones and the Aldo Allies. But are they Mummish?

Also like the Pettys but light colour is very impractical.

I have been wearing these for several years, but fancy a change now:

I've got these and these too - still mum boots.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2015 16:04

Merguez - If you like them, it really, really doesn't matter. How do you hope to wear them?

Merguez · 24/01/2015 16:08

I hope to wear them with straight jeans and skinnies, Remus.

Also have some black skinny trousers that needs shoes to go with (currently wear black brogues with them but they are definitely Mummish).

MarshaBrady · 24/01/2015 16:09

You can get black and brown leather too. But probably better with skinnies than straight leg.

passthewineplz · 24/01/2015 16:10

Clarks and M&S have some nice shoes and boots, but addmitedly they have some God dam ugly things too. I tend to buy boots from dune, they last years and tend to be more classic looking. I've got the black ones

HalleLouja · 24/01/2015 16:10

I have these. I didn't think they were mumsy but maybe they are.....

Carvela Silk Boots.

Anyway am in love with them.

Merguez · 24/01/2015 16:11

Pettys are sold out

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2015 16:14

I think straight jeans are maybe harder to match with shoes - I don't wear them, so don't know.

These look gorgeous and would be nice with skinnies but are horribly expensive

Lovely burgundy ones

RingtheBells · 24/01/2015 16:23

Most of my boots are probably 'mum' boots, I also own the brown M&S ones Teresa linked too. I do like to be comfortable though, and I think 'mum' boots is just another name for comfortable boots. My most comfortable pair I own is a flattish pair of ruched leather footglove boots from M&S. I think I am going to embrace the 'mum' boot. Grin

CiderwithBuda · 24/01/2015 16:25

I've got these

Bound to be someone who thinks they are mum boots though!

But I am 50 and a mum!
