silly question....how do you use a curling wand?

I have a curling wand (thick 1.5 in barrel), apparently it is great for doing big loose "beach waves", but I can't for the life of me, figure out how to use it!
Though admittedly, I have only tried two or three times. How do you hold it/wrap your hair???

I hold it pointing downwards, so handle bit at the top, wind the hair around starting at the top and hold at the bottom for 15 seconds, release and carry on whole way around my head. Try not to touch until your hair cooled down. No idea if this is the correct way but works for me and makes nice waves in my hair.

Lots of tutorials on YouTube which are good.
