New merrell haven coat is leaking!!

I searched and read through what felt like a million threads on here. Decided to buy the merrell haven and I've worn it today for the first time. My left shoulder is wet!!! Not impressed! Is there anything I can do? I don't want to have to refund it :(

Was it actually billed as waterproof (versus water resistant, which means you're alright in a shower but in heavy rain you could get some water coming through)? If there's water coming through it probably means the seams aren't taped or similar, and there's not really much you can do about that if it's not meant to have that level of protection. If it was sold as waterproof then you can probably get your money back.

Might it be condensation?

leedy · 12/01/2015 11:02

Just looked at the Merrell website and it's only listed as water resistant, which unfortunately means it's not guaranteed to function as a raincoat. (versus eg the North Face Arctic Parka, which is actually described as waterproof)

Exchange it for another if it's faulty but you still want it.

ShatnersBassoon · 12/01/2015 11:04

Ah, water resistant fabric won't keep water out, even in light rain. The fabric will be able to resist absorption to a certain point, but will eventually let it through, and the seams won't be sealed. Perhaps it isn't faulty.

Oh bugger!! I was sure from all the rave reviews that it was waterproof... Damn! I even ran my arm under the tap yesterday to check and the water rolled off like Mercury!

We're you caught in a massive downpour or a light shower? If it wasn't heavy rain I think you could return it. The fact that one shoulder was dry would suggest that the other side of the coat might not be seamed correctly.

Big download including hail. Good old Scotland!

I would return even though it was a big down pour as it may have a seam problem if one side was soaked and other side dry.

I've got a merrel haven. Worn it for 2 years now in all weathers. I have never experienced the problem you have had, and to be honest Mine seems totally waterproof. I realise they aren't supposed to be fully waterproof, however yours sounds faulty to me.

izzybizzybuzzybee · 15/01/2015 11:29

Hmmmmm. I'll email the retailer and see. I got it for a bargain price too! Mine is the one with the zip, not the duffle if that makes a difference?

Agree yours sounds faulty. I was caught in the tail end of a hurricane last year with torrential rain and I was dry as a bone under my haven (my trousers and shoes were another story)

Littlepumpkinpie · 15/01/2015 15:48

Had mine four years and been out in heavy down pours many times its totall waterproof

izzybizzybuzzybee · 16/01/2015 20:51

Thanks. I emailed them but not much use as they want me to send a picture of the fault but there isn't a visible one!

Take a pic anyway, explain one shoulder was dry.
Go for a water proof.
