Separate base and top coat for nails?

I use a two in one, currently OPI start to finish, yet someone at work who never has chipped nail polish says its best to use a separate base and top coat. My nail polish always chips quickly, even brands like OPI. Yet it seems quicker and cheaper to use a two in one base and top coat. What do you think?

I use one coat of Nail Envy as a base then colour then Seche Vite on top. Seche Vite is magical, my nail varnish never chips.
