Feeling Frugal for 2015

FrugalMcDougal · 30/12/2014 13:40

I'm planning a clothes/ make-up buying ban for at least the start of 2015 and just buying things when I really need them.

I have a good amount of clothes and accessories and think I could be much more creative in how I wear them instead of going for my old favourites when I'm rushing in the mornings. I want to make the most of what I have.

I'm aiming high and imagining myself planning the next day's outfit the night before.

Anyone interested in supporting each other and sharing outfits?

Peonies - Thank you. I don't really hold with the colours thing much tbh. I look awful in bright yellow, for example, but just wear it as a skirt with a black top instead etc. Shove a scarf with a grey jumper and it would be fine, yep? And boots are nowhere near your face, so wear whatever colour you want!

Your outfit today sounds amazing.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 04/01/2015 20:19

What colours of scarf would people put with a pale grey jumper? I really struggle to combine colours, I always gravitate towards black + colour rather than colour + colour.

Maybe teal or russet/rusty colour?

Today I wore an ancient red Whistles Breton top, Uniqlo jeggings and a furry gilet.

Miss A I love yellow and grey together if you have a yellow scarf?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2015 21:48

Bright pink is gorgeous with grey.

Wellieswithaholein · 05/01/2015 09:01

I'm never having my colours done as most of my clothes seem to be based around grey or black!
I do wear some colours but I can see if it suits me or not.
With grey I like silver blue or pink personally.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 05/01/2015 10:02

Thanks for the ideas! I don't have scarves in any of those colours, but I am planning to invest in some coloured ones soon.

Did a big rummage through wardrobes for rarely/never (the shame) worn clothes and accessories over the weekend and have already made 300 quid on eBay! Less unworn stuff, more money. Score. Going to put some more stuff up during the week, I have a feeling there's an almost unworn pair of boots lurking under the bed, a nice red leather handbag I haven't used in about five years, and a "not sure why I bought this" metallic satchel eBay purchase.

Also in the spirit of avoiding unnecessary clutter/expenditure, think I'm going to return a bag I bought in the sales but do not, strictly speaking, need, it's a slightly olive-y/greeny brown and I suspect it won't go with much even though it's lovely (will, for instance, clash slightly with my army green parka). Definite shopping weakness there: buying things that are really nice in and of themselves but that I won't actually use. I will, however, hang on to the neon yellow one I bought before Christmas as I reckon it will cheer up/distract from various outfits of basics.

And ooh, LOADS of colours look great with grey (I love grey) - yellow, bright pink, navy in particular.

Today's ensemble: newish dark denim skinny jeans that are dying my hands blue (cannot remember how many washes are required before they stop doing this, it's very annoying, I look like I have DROWNED HANDS), navy/hot pink breton, brown stompy boots.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 05/01/2015 13:07

Today... Black dune biker boots with gold hardware, faded mid blue jeans, khaki grandad top, huge green furry sweater, gold watch and pearl stud earrings.

daimbardiva · 05/01/2015 13:58

Managed a trip into town without even looking at sales, good. Wearing exactly the same as yesterday, bad. I have so little imagination when it comes to everyday dressing!!

BlueEyedWonder · 05/01/2015 14:13

I've also stuck a few bits on ebay and plan to return a couple of recent purchases that are just replicas of things I already have. I don't need 25 scarves!
Today I'm wearing an old merino fitted cardigan that I thought a bit frumpy. I'm wearing it buttoned up so it looks more like a crew neck jumper and tucked into high waist jeans. I'm getting into this!!!

leedy · 05/01/2015 15:42

Returned the bag and a dress that was slightly too long and a jumper that wasn't quite the colour I thought it was going to be online. All perfectly nice items, all NOT SOMETHING I ACTUALLY NEED RIGHT NOW, even if they were on sale.

noddyholder · 05/01/2015 16:57

I bought a coat in the sales from Cos and thats it I have enough AM going to ebay loads and start again later this year I am mainly bored with much of mu stuff nothing wrong with it so can't just buy without making a saving somewhere

FrugalMcDougal · 05/01/2015 18:38

It sounds like everyone is doing excellently.

Leedy £300! Nice going.

The Hush sale doesn't finish today. T'was just the Pre Sale (wtf?). the main sale kicks off at midnight tonight. More temptation!

A facebook contact is organising a nearly new sale in February so I've booked myself a place at that to give myself a deadline to sort stuff out and then sell, sell, sell! Actually quite excited by the prospect!

GeorginaWorsley · 05/01/2015 22:46

Big pile of stuff from my larger days to eBay.
Today wore Boden skinnies, h and m white vest, uniqlo taupe merino crew neck and phase eight silver necklace.

Shopping the back of the wardrobe today - Toast denim skirt that I shrank out of (and now post-Christmas sadly fits again, hoping to rectify this), elderly Boden orange/white breton top, silver seahorse necklace that I bought in San Francisco seven or eight years ago, black tights, black Ugg biker boots. Not sure if it is an entirely successful outfit but it's presentable enough. :)

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 06/01/2015 11:25

Today- black skirt with terracotta and cream tiny floral pattern, brown leather belt with small brass fox on the buckle, black opaques, black suede ankle boots, gold pea pod necklace, Alex McQueen bracelet.

Leedy I too have filled back into some items that were definitely too big before Christmas, hoping being back at work will rectify this as I rarely snack at work and a, much more active than at home.

daimbardiva · 06/01/2015 13:29

Skinnies again with men's grey m&s cashmillion v neck which I love and was only &16. Actually feel quite elegant in it and it shows off a new pendant I was given for christmas nicely. Also managed to swap a boden hoody that i love but has never quite fitted for some handmade cards I'd have bought anyway :) surely bartering is frugal!

leedy · 06/01/2015 14:02

Peonies, sadly my work is a total danger zone for snacking as we have free food in the kitchen. Which is nice but means I have to have STEELY RESOLVE re biscuits, etc.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 06/01/2015 16:29

We have free tea and coffee and biscuits but I am thankfully allergic to the biscuits! Grin

I tend to be on the go from 8.45 through until 1pm when I get free lunch, full of good resolutions to eat the healthy bits from lunch from now on. Also need to work on eating loads as soon as I get in and trying to train myself to wait until dinner time. Snacking is my downfall.

Anyway, sorry for derail!

I am planning to go through my wardrobe and throw away a lot of stuff that doesn't fit, this may mean making some purchases but to be honest I probably have so much stuff that I'll still have plenty.

leedy · 06/01/2015 16:43

"I am planning to go through my wardrobe and throw away a lot of stuff that doesn't fit, this may mean making some purchases but to be honest I probably have so much stuff that I'll still have plenty."

Similarly. After my big clear out/eBaying festival at the weekend (and to be honest that was a first pass, there's definitely more to go!), the only things I think I could do with are another pair of black jeans (existing pair is a bit tatty) and some more thin layering-type t-shirts for wearing under my 8 million cardigans/jumpers (I have many jumpers) and in my sometimes annoyingly overheated office.

I am going to hang on to the slightly tight jeans/trousers/skirts, as I'm hoping there'll be at least some post-festive shrinkage.

FrugalMcDougal · 06/01/2015 18:18

I have stood firm in the face of the Hush sale. Helps that the dress I wanted wasn't in it.

I wore a disappointingly many-repeated outfit for work today. Must try harder tomorrow. Will hang it out tonight.

Sounds like everyone is doing well.

I am doing more days in my job and today wearing a denim skirt, blue top, grey cardigan and black boots.

I find my tops get really manky, I tend to wear long sleeve t shirts with a cardi most days. I like to wear cotton but some of the older tops have deodorant lines where I have put them on over my head and the marks don't seem to wash out.
