If I'm wearing statement red lips

I shouldn't wear more than eyeliner on my eyes should I?

I've got my Xmas party on Friday and I'm thinking red lipgloss will look festive and different to my day look. However, I think if I wear 'going out' eye make up (smoky eyes with grey/black eyeshadow) as well, it'll look far too much.

Am I right or overthinking it?

I left the glosses at work so I wouldn't forget them so no picturesConfused

I'm pale as sin if that helps. Though my foundation will be sand haha.

From a quick gander on google... I will have a pale eyeshadow on my eye insides, next to my nose. I will have the palest grey flicked on the lid and eyeliner. I got new mascara for secret Santa today so I saved money there (yay!) she also got me a lipstick that's fancy but it's pink. I will post a pic tomorrow of my eye and my lips. Ha!

Phrases like

Oh. Not sparkly gloss. No.

Make me re think it all. Confused I'm petrified.

I would definitely go with a bit of light definition on the eyes if the gloss is glittery.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 18/12/2014 20:02

Sorry, I meant not sparkly gloss with the strong eyes look, it will be mega overkill. Sorry for confusion!

TallulahTwinkletoes · 18/12/2014 20:17

Haha. Good save.

I would do brown eyeshadow like all the pictures on google but I'm too pale so brown looks bad and obv because of this, I don't own any.

This has been such a difficult day for me. I asked approx six people which they preferred and they all said the opposite to the one I was certain about this morning.

If there was a competition on MN this week for first world problems then that post would surely win. Grin

It's a similar scale to the massacres occurring elsewhere...

Seriously, I did think that when I wrote it but if I'm causing this much drama over eyeliner, I think it's fair to exaggerate it to a world crisis level.

Ok, here is my take on it.

If you are doing any type of "heavy" make up, whether it be eyes or lips, then avoid contouring. Unless you are Kim Kardashian, won't be in natural/bright light at any point, and/or quite admire the drag queen look.

Contouring is extremely difficult to master without looking like a badger.

Also, dark eyes and bright lips is so very 1980's. Dark eyes and dark lips can be done if you know what you're doing and don't might looking a bit gothic. But bright lips? No.

If you can afford it, get thee to MAC, who do some of the best well known red lipsticks. RUSSIAN RED is basically pillar box red. It's matte, so lasts ages and looks classy, but is quite drying, so you need a lip balm underneath.

RUBY WOO is also a very bold colour, but slightly more orange or pink. It seems slightly less pigmented to me. Anyway, it's another very popular shade.

With strong red lipstick, the most important thing is for your skin to look even, so use whatever you normally use on your skin, but make sure it's the right colour.

Really, all you need apart from that is potentially some eyeliner, and lots of mascara. And make sure your eyebrows are done, unless you have naturally dark brows.

kaykayred · 19/12/2014 11:42

PS, You will need a lip liner. You don't need a mac one - any bright red will do.

If you don't use it, the colour will bleed and will be really irritating.

That's actually why I could never wear strong colours in a lipgloss. It's sticky, gets wiped off, and bleeds no end.

I think sometimes just have fun with it, judge as you go along if you want a bit more. Start with a little though and build, can always add but it can be a pain to take away.

I wear bright red lipstick everyday.

On my eyes I use a kohl pencil eyeliner around my eyes and and just a little under my eyes. Smooth is slightly so it's more ruffed up and wear black mascara on my eyelashes. I wear a shimmery clear eyeshadow. It looks great.

OP if you are still reading, do your base first with a little bronzer just enough to warm up your colour but not look bronzed.
Then do your lips, get them as red as you want and then move on the your eyes.

This way you can add colour / definition until you think it looks balanced rather than too much.

i'd go with a sandy nude all over with a darker nude in the crease so it looks more like a shadow I.e. definition rather than eye shadow colour.
Then add eye liner, top first then bottom of you think you need it and mascara.

Add a little more bronzer and possibly blusher if you think you need it.

HelloitsmeFell · 20/12/2014 04:58

Actually I think I agree with kaykay about the contouring. I think what I really meant by shading/contouring was don't do for a stripe of obviously colourful blusher as it will be too much with the strong lips. I meant just do subtle shading in your cheeks instead in a fairly neutral blush colour. Contouring was the wrong choice of word. Grin

Where I live lots of the glamorous young Arab women go out in the middle of the day with a full face of contouring and to be honest they all look a bit like Michael Jackson.

TallulahTwinkletoes · 20/12/2014 09:58

I went with pale grey on the inside of my eye and a darker but still pale (a little lighter than the keyboard background for this app) liquid eyeliner on the top and strong mascara. Bronzer on my cheeks. Everyone said the rimmel lipgloss was the best but it very quickly looked very pink and due to not reapplying that much it was off more than it was on unfortunately.

Thanks for all your advice guys.

I don't get this contouring shit. I mean what's the white stuff they're using? It looks great but definitely not something I could do.
