How much do you pay for a haircut?

What do you pay for your haircut - is it from a small local salon who does a brilliant job for £20 or a top notch salon for £70

I am having qualms about paying out £70 for a cut and blow dry at a city centre salon and part of me thinks there's a highly skilled hairdresser out there who does a good job for much less money. On the other hand I have a belief that you get what you pay for. I've had so many rubbish or mediocre. cuts that I'd rather pay to get a good cut in a top salon.

What's your views?

I pay £50 for a full head of highlights on long hair (both blonde and brown dye) and a cut and blow. My hairdresser is in a small NW town and does a really good job.

I pay £25 +tips every 6 weeks. Local Salon took me a while to find someone I like who does a good job, love my hairdresser now.

I cut my own hair for years and years but had two £30-ish haircuts earlier this year after someone recommended a particular hairdresser. I did like what she did, but I told her I was thinking of growing my fringe out for a change, and after a while I decided this really wasn't working for me, so I impulsively cut a fringe back in myself. Since then I've been kind of avoiding her in case she tells me off - and I can't really afford her prices regularly anyway. I found a Cellys ("everything £9.90!" which isn't literally true - but my cut was £9.90) in my parents' town recently and had them tidy it up a bit, and it looks just as good as it did with the more expensive hairdresser. There's one opening in my town soon so I might just stick with them.

Having said that I am notoriously unfussy about my hair - have never coloured or straightened it, rarely blow-dry or use styling products, and it's curly so it doesn't really show up mistakes (which is how I could get away with cutting it myself for so long). Maybe if I had dead straight hair and wanted something complicated done I would find that a more expensive hairdresser did make a difference. But I simply can't pay some of the prices that have been mentioned.

£35 for a wash, cut and blow-dry in a city centre independent. I go every 10ish weeks, with a fringe trim in between. I tip my hairdresser (which brings it up to £40) because she is bloody brilliant!

Marmaladybird · 03/11/2015 09:07

£43.50 for re-style and blow dry.

£65 for a cut in the local county town, or about £120 for colour and cut. I would compromise or give up on any other S&B spend before reducing this cost. I have only once found a good, reasonable hairdresser -- and she gave it up in favour of landscape gardening!

We have a wonderful hairdresser who comes to us - £20 for a cut and blow dry for me £10 each for the menfolk. She was a senior stylist at Toni and Guy before having children.
When I lived in London I would get the train home to my parents in the NE to go to my hairdresser there - she was brilliant and the train and haircut with her combined was still cheaper than the average London salon. I wouldn't begrudge paying more for a good cut, but thankfully I have never had to. DH's ex spends the equivalent to all the maintenance a fortune on her cut/colour/treatments and it looks like Lego hair, so price doesn't immediately equate to good hair.

JoyceDivision · 03/11/2015 21:42

£45 cut at a leeds city salon with owner.

He is fab, been going over 15 years, whenever I have gone to a different place I can tell the difference,as can others, now a lot of my friends and their families go!

I take DD now as she has such fine hair and was getting upset it wouldn't grow long and swishy that I made a deal that I wuld take to her to the posh grown up salon in the city for atrendy cut, now she loves her short bob!

Judydreamsofhorses · 03/11/2015 22:55

£62 every six weeks in an Aveda salon. I colour it myself because otherwise I'd be bankrupt.

JaceLancs · 03/11/2015 23:41

£32 for cut and root touch up - I won't have it blow dried as am wavy/curly
So save money by scrunching in some curling cream and leaving salon with damp hair to dry au naturelle
Every once in a while I have a full head colour and that's an extra £5
Local salon but more up market than others nearby

amarmai · 04/11/2015 01:09

$10 at a hairdressing school. They do a good job too!

PetiteBateau · 04/11/2015 08:48

6 weekly haircut £42.00.
I trim my own fringe in between salon visits.
I colour my own hair at home.
