How much do you pay for a haircut?

What do you pay for your haircut - is it from a small local salon who does a brilliant job for £20 or a top notch salon for £70

I am having qualms about paying out £70 for a cut and blow dry at a city centre salon and part of me thinks there's a highly skilled hairdresser out there who does a good job for much less money. On the other hand I have a belief that you get what you pay for. I've had so many rubbish or mediocre. cuts that I'd rather pay to get a good cut in a top salon.

What's your views?

It does depend on your hair as well, mine is quite thick and curly and whoever cuts it and I have done it myself, it makes no difference, its very forgiving. An expensive cut and blow-dry would be totally wasted as my hair just goes its own way. If I had hair which was more stylable I would probably go to somewhere more expensive, I tried a couple of expensive places when I was younger but still ended up with my usual untrendy curly cut.

Floralnomad · 16/12/2014 13:35

I pay £30 ( excluding tip) at a local salon and go every 6 weeks , my stylist is £39 for a CWB but charges me less because I don't have it 'finished' as I tend to go for a dishevelled effect .

Siarie · 16/12/2014 13:43

£120-£140 but that's highlights/lowlights full head and cut/blow dry. I think just the cut and blow dry is about £30-£40 depending who does it.

MindReader · 16/12/2014 13:44

£9 at local salon
£7 for ds
£7 for dd

Family for £23. Result.
salon has won some awards too Grin

kaykayblue · 16/12/2014 14:01

I'm growing my hair, so only getting a trim every 8 months or so. A family member cuts it (qualified hairdresser), so it's totally free of charge.

I hate going to hairdressers. I've paid an absolute fortune before and come out with haircuts that I hated.

Plus they seem to always insist on completely ignoring what I want.

I did type out a big rant, but then really what's the point.

I think cost does play a part to a degree, but then really in places like Toni and Guy you aren't paying for very talented people. You're paying for skinny alternatives, or hipster types who fit in with the company image.

Wow Mindreader that sounds good, it's not anywhere me in the East Midlands is it by any chance?

I agree about some expensive places giving you a clone look. I was forced into having an inverted Bob against my wishes by a hairdresser who told its popular cause it suits everyone - well it didn't suit me!

Senior stylist at posh gaff in Exeter charges £120 for cut and colour, including foil highlights. I paid much more 10 years ago in London, and have paid less locally, but IME the better the cut the longer it lasts. And this former editorial stylist totally gets what I want, which is to look as if I have not been near a hairdresser in years, without ever drying or combing it, yet artlessly mussed up perfect.

BackforGood · 16/12/2014 16:19

Nellymay your post before last doesn't sound AT ALL like you are trying to justify it to yourself. Nooooo Grin

Not sure where people get the idea that my mobile hairdresser (or indeed the lady I used before her) don't do such a good "cut" just because they don't charge rip off prices ? Confused

trader21c · 16/12/2014 16:23

£30 at a local salon - I've paid up to £48 in the past ...

MindReader · 16/12/2014 16:24

no nelly - it's Scotland!

pinkfrocks · 16/12/2014 16:28

£65 for cut and blow dry.

Ragwort · 16/12/2014 16:36

£7 in a tiny rural village when I visit my DB twice a year - have booked up for NYE. Grin

pinkfrocks · 16/12/2014 16:39

On a different topic in a way I find it sad that so many hairdressers are working for less than the minimum wage. Obviously with salon overheads in the SE prices are higher- I know my salon pays £35K a year in rent for the premises, plus business rates- but even so, charging £7 for your time seems far too little.

photocop · 16/12/2014 16:46

£57 (SW London)

pharoahinthebath · 16/12/2014 16:49

Last time I paid £33 for a wet cut (hate blow dries) . Have paid £40 for the senior stylist (salon owner) in my previous salon before they sold the business. Only go 3-4 times a year.
Have always been happy with the above haircuts - hence I would not pay £70 for a haircut - also refuse to go places where they refuse to do a cut without the blowdry.

Chandon · 16/12/2014 17:12

£85 in London

They always discuss first how it will be cut. And then cut it exactly as they say.

Never any nasty surprises.

Have had too many bad haircuts so am now risk averse.

Mintyy · 16/12/2014 17:14

£50.00 London zone 2.

Ragwort · 16/12/2014 17:44

Pink - I take your point but as I only earn barely over the minimum wage myself there is no way I would pay some of the prices mentioned on this thread for a haircut Shock.

It took the hairdresser about 20 minutes to do my hair (dry cut) and she'd actually quoted a bit more, which I agreed to, but said it had been so quick that she was happy to charge £7. (I did tip her Grin).

BackforGood · 16/12/2014 18:10

Not sure where you get your maths from, but £7 for 15mins to cut someone's hair works out at around £28 £ph gross - now, I know there will be some expenses to come out of that (lower for mobiles of course), but that would still put them WAY above minimum wage.

JemimaMuddledUp · 16/12/2014 18:27

£15 for a dry cut. I live in a small rural town, but with a large student population so the salons tend to keep fairly up with the trends. I have a pixie cut so it needs cutting every 6 weeks, I could never afford to do that at £70 a pop!

beautyfades · 16/12/2014 18:31

£35 Full head foils cut n blow.

Paddingtonthebear · 16/12/2014 18:34

£55 for cut/colour/blow dry. South. It's cheap, everywhere else was £80+. Its a salon but the stylists work on a self employed basis so don't charge salon prices. It's fab

chelsbells · 16/12/2014 18:40

£45 for wash, cut and blow dry.
£55 for the above but with a restyle.

He does a brilliant job and I don't mind paying it, I don't go every 6 weeks as my hair doesn't need it and when I do go I come out really happy with what he's done!

I should probably factor in fuel costs too as the salon is 130 miles away, So £30 there and back! Is it just me that travels miles to a decent hair dresser?!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 16/12/2014 18:43

59 for cut and blowdry

PowderMum · 16/12/2014 18:50

£80 for colour and cut in the Home Counties, Senior Stylist/Business Owner.
She understands my style cuts it so it lasts, I have it done every 5-6 weeks because of regrowth and I have a short style with fast growing hair.
Its around £35 without the colour.
